(On XP) When you put the video to full screen you get the usual bars at the top and bottom but also on the left and right.

Does anyone have WMP11 and NOT have this problem when playing any DVD?

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

Hi Freakshow! :)
Myself, I subscribe to cock-up rather than conspiracy theories. Operating systems and applications are so complex that a small mistake in one element can have quite dramatic effects in another, but there's no doubting original shenanigans by MS that instigated Real Player/US government and later EU action. ;)
(Completely different topic, but I'm impressed by the Vista Update improvements.)
(Edit PS - the 'naughty codec' could be a much simpler accidental or even deliberate change of file association problem.)

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

As far as I am aware I am fully upto date and haven't had any problems myself. I don't use Windows Media player for video usually, but when I do no problems.

The IE posting, I think that they had decided it was a naughty codec.

Let's not start spreading Microsoft conspiracy theories until it can be proven eh? :)

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

Freakshow, thank you for that. :)
Clearly changes via Updates are ongoing. Re-checking VLC Player in Ubuntu 8.04.1, it's once again producing the best quality video playback, courtesy of Ubuntu Updates, and is quite stunning at full screen on my DVI/HDMI interface wide-screen display.
As well as another forum post about IE7 problems, a very old friend who's not a computer expert, but a very good photographer and quite expert in the use of Magix photo presentations for video DVDs, has just told me about new problems with Windows Media Player not playing, hence my words about MS.
Unaffected by such problems myself, it's difficult to be sure, but it does sound as if recent Windows Updates (ie software patches) could well be responsible. ;)

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

Bruce, I was assuming that it was full screening properly, but that OP wasn't happy about the black boxes at the top and bottom. Running the file in VLC or Media Player Classic will give you the correct aspect ratio.

What I was getting at was you could stretch it to fill the screen and get rid of black boxes etc.

However, I don't understand the problem now that OP has explained it. All I can suggest is a different media player. I've never had this problem and wouldn't know where to look.

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

This is not the only report of problems related to Windows Media Player or IE7 playing of media files in the last two days. Perhaps MS have resumed their anti-competition changes via Updates which usurp file associations etc.
It might help to know whether XP or Vista are involved. That MS-instigated 'war' is what really prompted anti-competitive action by the US government and then the EU and is why I simply use VLC Player in 32-bit XP, Vista and Ubuntu. The latter version used to give the best results but along with other quite dramatic improvements, it's now slightly better in Vista.
@ Freakshow! - I'm puzzled by your VLC Player words. I find that simply double-clicking on the initial 'original size' window display, it jumps to correct aspect ratio, full-screen display, obviously 'letter-box' style on a 4:3 display, a little less obvious on an already wide-screen display. ;)

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

No i mean, on the left and right is black to.

Yes VLC works fine, ok i guess i stretches it but looks fine.

Media Player 9 used to do full screen fine, there must be a way to get 11 to do it.

RE: WMP 11 and full screen mode

When you say 2/3s do you mean it gives you black bars above and below the picture?

If yes, then that is fullscreen. In a cinema the screen is about 2.35:1 ratio, whereas normal monitros are either 16:10 or 16:9. You're seeing it fullscreen and in the correct ratio.

If you use something like VLC or Media Player Classic you can force it to stretch the picture, but it doesn't look very good when faces etc are extremely thin. Doesn't look right at all.

WMP 11 and full screen mode

This may sound like a novices question but its bugging me.

In Windows Media Player 11, when playing a DVD, it wont goto full screen, it only fills about 2/3. Pressed Atl+Ent to goto full screen mode but still does not fill the screen.

Ive been in the options for full screen but made no difference.

Any ideas?
