please check that they are not still taking payments from you as both my girlfriend and my grandad canceled AOL (not at the same time) and they continued to take payments from them! my grandad's was paying for his pipex and AOL at the sime time despite only having pipex!
and the girlfriend is currently paying for talk talk and AOL!!! even tho she canceled AOL 3 months ago!!
we've phoned them several times and they keep saying "sorry we'll sort it out!" but they have yet to deliver on their promise!

I never had a problem with AOL. It was just that I had the account for a few years and was paying £25 per month for just above 2Mb! This was with a usb modem which I ditched early on and bought a router. I have been paying over the odds for ages due to my laziness.

The reason I actually changed to tiscali is because the AOL acount was under a ex-girlfriends name and I had no control over it as they refuse to speak to me. :)

P.s. I just got a Siemens Orange wireless router for the girlfriends. Very small and easy to use. :)

Be router I got is a speedtouch 7xxx (don't know the numbers but it starts with a 7).

I've had no issues with it. Good wireless coverage, just plugged it in and it worked.

I know a few others hate the router, but I don't understand what their problems are.

Is the O2 one the same?

Yes, i've got the O2 router already - it is a bit on the hefty side. I'm not bothered though, as long as it works!!

o2 are cool, freephone tech support and twice the speed of aol with uk call centres.The router is a bit big though.

I'd be surprised if AOL wouldn't have offered you a wireless router eventually.

I got one out of them a couple of years back when i asked for a MAC code and i've just been offered a new Netgear one when i applied for a MAC code again but this time i'm going - getting connected to O2 on 27/03/08 :w00t:

If i'm being honest, i've never really had a problem with AOL - i've had a stable connection (mostly), never had an outage in 8 years with them, always had any technical problems resolved over the phone(although it is a bit more difficult nowadays since they moved to India) I got used to the AOL browser eventually (Although i haven't installed it on my new build - just use Firefox) So i hope i'm not jumping out of the frying pan into the fire - i guess i just fancied a change + I can get a much faster connection for the same money i'm paying to AOL, having an O2 mobile.

Left Aol around 5 moths ago when i moved homes, however istead of cancelling my connection three days later like they were supposed to they cancelled it there and then :angry:

I presume that the T&Cs of Be and O2 are practically the same. If it is, no need to worry. By the time you'll exceed their bandwidth you'll be needing 3 new HDDs :P

Be is the best ISP if it's in your area.

Well after having the wrong support number and finally getting through it turns out the frustrated e-mail I sent worked and the account has been cancelled. Now all I need is my MAC Code. :)

Think i'll go with Tiscali...

I briefly worked for AoL a while back as a techie....before discovering that they didn't really want techies - just people who could read a script off a (slower than paint drying) computer screen. It was a "smart system" that (in theory) learned from experience, but in practice didn't as we were pressured to "keep the stats up" by NOT feeding back info on problems. Most of my then-colleagues would have been totally lost without the script to follow, but if you were a "real" techie, it slowed things down (while you waited to be told what the next question should be, when you already KNEW) Two things stuck in my mind: firstly, the department on the next floor had twice as many people working for it, and their job wasn't to fix problems, but to talk people out of leaving. (Tech support didn't have access to the software that would "turn off" an account) the second was the very "variable" quality of their new recruits: mostly people who didn't even own a PC, let alone have internet access. I suggested that offering a discount to staff might help us gain personal experience. But thinking about it, it would have really made absolutely no difference: your personal experience and ability was irrelevant... The Script was KING!

AoL back then employed people to take out contracts with their rivals, phone their helplines, and try to get their rivals' employees to make "inappropriate statements" which they'd then make official complaints about. They were absolutely terrified that their rivals might try the same trick on them, and forbade anyone who worked for AoL from expressing ANY kind of opinion on [b][i]anything[/i][/b]. That makes it kind of hard to form any kind of a "rapport" with customers! I remember a call from an ex-serviceman, who had married the ex wife of an American serviceman, while in Germany. His wife's son had been murdered back in the USA, by a felon who was out on remand for another offence; they were keeping abreast of the trial via the internet... but the computer had crashed, losing all the information (including bookmarks) The official line was that this simply wasn't AoL's problem. I took the view that finding replacement links was a job that needed doing... so I did so, although fully aware that I was committing a "grave offense" for which I could be fired! (I quit at the end of the month. I can't work for a company where I end the day thinking "I did a good job today, and I'm proud of it.. I hope I don't get fired for doing it.")

This week iv just got my mac code from Aol, they told me i would have unlimited downloads but then went back on what they said.I found the call centre staff poor and one person would give you a different answer from another.They promised me a month free when I signed up for an 18 month contract but then went and took money anyway they seem to do as they please as well as traffic shaping which makes the network really slow. I'm so glad il be moving to 02 (be) broadband and iv heard good things about them.

I had to threaten them with ofcom... I mean one minute they couldn't give me my mac due to tech problems with BT (yes BT!). The next minute she had it straight in front of her from aol's own tech support!

1) Don't be nice to them! be straight to the point (don't let their retention team talk you round!)

2) Don't let them build a rapport with you, because if they do they'll fob you off!

3) Mention the word "Ofcom"., that usually gets the ball rolling :)

A MAC code. You give this code to your new ISP and that lets them switch your BB connection to their service on a specific date with about 1 hour downtime. The only time you won't need a MAC code (and just need to cancel AOL) is when you are having a new phone connection put in (I think).

I'd ring the broadband number and ask to be put through or ask for the number. You can do it via email and post as detailed here:

But as you have found while they suggest you do it via phone, they don't actually give the number.

While your on the phone maybe you can point out this "error" to them.

Good luck on leaving. Don't be tempted by the offers they give you, remember why you are leaving and don't take no for an answer. As long as you are out of minimum contract they are legally obliged to give you the code.

I need to cancel my AOL. Can I find a number? Can I heck! The website says type cancel in AOL Keyword which appears to only be availiable if you have their awful browser installed which I dont and dont want! :angry:
