I couldn't download large files as they pulled the plug after 2 hours. The other downside was the phone was out of action when on the net.
RE: virgin media

Alternatively, instead of Dial-Up where you set a file a file to download and leave it for the weekend, or maybe update windows, you go for a good well rated ISP. In my case it's Be Unlimited.

At my average speed I get 14MBps which equates to 1.75 MegaBytes per second. In a month I can therefore theoretically do 4536Gbs a month!

And that's £18 a month.

It's not a case of going back to dial-up, just getting a good ISP :)

RE: virgin media

Um, about traffic shaping, monthly capacity etc.

Why does Everyone refuse to even Consider Dial Up.?

After all, 4,5 kbytes per second, 3600 seconds a hour, 24 hours a day, 30 days a month ends up being 12-20 GIG a month.

From what Ive seen of so called Fair Use Policies, they combine Upload, and Download data together, so anyone offering 40 gig a month, is only letting you use the equivalent of a dial up connection.. 80 Gig a month is equivalent to a dual channel ISDN.

I think I ask this every year.

When are we going to have gurenteed dial up capacity on our so called broadband connections?

When is anyone who does a Broadband Comparison, use Dial Up as a baseline comparison also?

I miss the good old days when I could download a full gig over the weekend on a V92 modem, thats 4 Gig a month even now, with 2 Gig limited BroadBand.

So, traffic shaping, guarentee one 64k channel for voice, one for browsing, one for general data, and the rest to be shared dynamically purely depending on how many people there are?. Given that this way, you pay minimum, you get One data channel, as you pay more, you get More guarenteed data channels?

What would be expected costs this method?

Rodney

Old enough to be able to wait,
Young enough to be able to wait.
RE: virgin media

Found this on the net

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/05/29/virgin_media_daytime_restrictions/

Using the same old excuse to ensure the quality is not affected - looks like those fibre optic cables are not all they were cracked up to be :D

RE: virgin media

I really don't mind traffic shaping as long as it is done honestly.

If I pay for 10Mbps I expect to be able to get 10Mbps when not doing heavy downloading.
I expect to use spare bandwidth so that if at peak time I download 10GB then I expect it to be slow but if I download 10GB off peak then I don't want to be shaped after 1GB (which is what happens with NTL)

Basically, I'm fully aware that having an infra-structure that can cope with everybody's desires at 6pm and sit idle at 2am is not realistic for any business. I am also fully aware that companies over-subscribe. There is a balance between the two that can achieve decent profit margins and an acceptable service.

RE: virgin media

heard about this a couple of weeks ago

its going downhill, once they switch the analogue signals off that will free up some of the network also the docsis 3 system will bring greater speeds and higher bandwidth capacity thus freeing up more space when users migrate to this new service

RE: virgin media

Makes no difference to me, Virgin takes your money each month, then you expect to have a proper service without any traffic shaping, dosen't matter whether its ADL or Cable.
RE: virgin media

I'm guessing you're on about ADSL here.

Cable has had the traffic shaping for a while, only ever had it applied once though. Speed is rock solid and I'll be going from 4 Mb to 10 Mb soonish for no extra money.

RE: virgin media

Ditch em.

It will get worse with them, I use to have them, things got so bad with poor connection, traffic shaping, that I changed over to Be.

No restrictions, good speed and never yet received any warnings with regard to my heavy downloading.
RE: virgin media

my bro is going to bring the letter over tomorrow ill scan it up and post it, unless i get 1 before he gets to mine

RE: virgin media

haven't heard a dickie?

RE: virgin media

Really?
