I dug the article up after seeing a pair of the slower 85mb adapters very cheap at ebuyer, and confirmed that the two standards are not compatible but can co-exist.
What I'm unsure of is whether adding pair of the slower 85mb devices to my existing set up would have a detrimental (in terms of speed) on the existing 200AV connections. Also, given that a router is involved, would traffic between the 200AV and 85mb devices be possible, obviously at the lower rate?

Thanks

W98 Networking problem (password?)

I have a new laptop and haven't used the old W98 desktop for some time.

I turned the W98 desktop on again I remembered it popped up with some windows screens at start-up, which it didn't before I started trying to do networking things with it a few months ago.

The first one said " Microsoft Networking - No domain server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources". Buttons --> OK - Cancel

I pushed the return key as I don't know any password!

The next one was "Enter Network Password - Enter Your network password for Microsoft Networking. -- Username my PC ----password box - blank, and Domain Workgroup. Save the password box ticked. Virgin don't provide Router's or encourage their use but I'd only be using one at a time.

Looking at some earlier posts and the sticky, am I right in thinking that the ethernet connection coming from the modem is plugged into the back of the router, and up to three PC's can be connected from this using ethernet cable, whilst sharing one ISP address.

That Buffalo seems highly recommended, I've also looked at the:-

Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4 Port Switch/VPN Endpoint - for Cable Users for £43.50 on Dabs.com and a cheaper model with no firewall mentioned £10 less. Guys, I hope that someone can help me as I'm at my wits end.

I have a Fujitsu Scenic P with a Pentium 4 2.93GHz and 1 M of Ram.

I connect to the internet (SKY) through a Sagem ADSL router. Up until now I have had no problems with my connections.

I recently purchased 2 Mediasonic NCIS HD9-SU2LAH NAS drives each containing a 250G Philips SATA HD.

I set these up following the instructions (in very poor English) and connected them to my system through a Netgear GS608 router. I had no problem accessing the drives and copied over some files as a test. I did find that some files seemed to have dissapeared on the way.

The following day when I booted my system I was unable to acess the Internet. I tried unplugging the drives and after a boot up was able to access the internet again. I then tried plugging the drives in again, same problem, unable to access the net. I tried plugging them straight into the Sagem but with no effect.

On looking at my Directory Opus I was able to see the discs and their contents. I though I would double check the set up of the drives but IE could not find them. The drives came with a utility to find the drive's IP adresses and I found that the IP's had changed from 192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.3 to 169.254.01 & 169.254.02. Again Tried to access get the set up pages through IE but with no luck.

Tried a factory reset on both drives but now I can find only one under IP 169.254.01.

Can anyone out ther kindly help me while i still have some hair left.

Any help would be greatjy appreciated

Robert

Printer Sharing Problems - Solved

See above

Printer Sharing Problems

I have 2 PC`s, primary PC runs PCLOS2007, secondary runs WinXP Home and 2 Printers which all were connected via a 4 Port ADSL Modem Router and both PC`s could print out on either printer .I found myself needing additional network ports so decided to fit a network switch which I have done. So 2 PC`s and 2 Printers now connect to a Netgear 8 Port switch (Ports 1 to 4) which in turn is connected to my Router (Port 8 from switch to Port 1 on router). Internet access on 2 PC`s o.k but problem now is that ! cannot send jobs to the printers. Tried deleting and adding printers but they have become "invisible" on the network. If I check the DHCP list in my router I can see the PC`s and Printers listed and their addresses (192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4 respectively for the printers). So do I have to connect the printers direct to the router to share them between the 2 PC`s or is there some way of doing it leaving them connected to the switch.

HDTV.

First apologies if this is in the wrong section but since its going to be part of my network I thought I'd post here I haver no idea where its meant to go.

Since I bought and put together a media/pvr pc I have realised that I need a new TV as I can't connect my old one up. Well I could but apparently its either expensive or you sacrifice picture quality or both.

I'm not sure whether at face value I didn't plan this out very well or that subconsciously I did it so I could justify to the missus I needed a new gadget?? Who knows.

Right down to it, I know nothing about HDTV's, apparently 1080p output or is it 1080i (I always get mixed up) is the best with 100mhz refresh?? Anyway I'm looking for a cheapish TV thats gonna last a while so was wondering if you guys could help. I was looking at this from ebuyer:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136349?hp_prod=1

Is it any good or are there better ones? I'm trying to figure out whats going on with some mystical problem between my router and my new build.

The problem is if I connect my new build to the router with a cable it doesn't work. I get limited connectivity in windows xp, and in ubuntu it says its connected but it isn't, I cant even log in to the router on either OS. I can connect wirelessly to the router and access the internet on both OS's though. I don't know whats going on since it was working yesterday.

I've tried troubleshooting everything I can think of but everything is working fine. Heres what I've tried:

My other computer with vista and ubuntu on it connects fine to the internet through the router, and I can log in to the router. So I know the router is working fine.

I've connect the new build directly to the internet and that works fine. So its not the computer.

I've connected the router to the new build using the same cable I use for the old computer and still the same problem, so its not the cable. I even tried using all of the LAN ports to see if its one of them thats duff but nothing still the same.

I've not changed any settings on the router other than to secure the wireless network which is working fine.

I recently updated the driver for the NIC in XP but if its this it shouldn't effect Ubuntu, but I rolled it back anyway still no joy. Its also the same NIC I have in my other computer thats working with no problems.

I'm at my wits end what the hell is going on? None of the hardware is malfunctioning and neither is any of the software. Im using a D-link router DIR-615 (ver 2.00 E) and NIC is a RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller from realtek. Any help will be very much appreciated. Cheers.

question for logging on a network

how do i get the log on scree that company's have, college's or librarys etc.

where as i have to log in my laptop kinda, if you understand.

i don't know what its called?

Connecting the internet through another computer

My gaming pc is the one with the internet wirelessly and i have attached my mums pc through the ethernet port to it because i need to do some updating with it. is there a way of running the internet off my gaming pc but using the internet on my mums pc.
Oops, nearly forgot to mention, both are running vista home basic 32bit

I hope this post make sence
thanks :):D:)

Orange livebox

Hi All.

Can anyone shed some light on the problem with my O.Livebox .Sometime ago i could not access the internet and called the Orange helpline, they told me to unplug the supply to the Livebox and this would reset my IP address, and low and behold it works but lately it is happening nearly everyday. I have been back to the helpline and they told me it was my network card, as it is onboard i bought a new one and put it in and yes the fault is still there.
