Thanks, for the reply, I'm able to see the Vista laptop on the Network Neighborhood in the W98 desktop, as I changed the ZoneAlarm firewall setting on the W98 desktop !

But now if I click the laptop icon I get a "Enter Network Password" box, is this one that was set in the W98 box, which I dont know!! or something to do with the Vista Laptop password (my laptop User password don't work!).

Any ideas, thanks - is it to do with that bit I typed above from Vista - private network and is this same if the router is connected to the internet?

Going purely from memory - there's a setting in there somewhere to change that to something along the lines of Microsoft Family, or similar. If you right click the network adaptor, I'm sure it's a dropdown box with three options. If you change it to the correct one, you get rid of the password box at logon.

If you can wait until tomorrow, I'll install 98SE in VirtualBox and check it out. It's been a while since I did it properly :P

I had a feeling it was the purple bit!! I must of accidently clicked the line the box was on when I was fiddling around :D

Both computers can access the internet, but can't see each other though ?

It may help if I set the Vista network to be "Private", but I'm a bit confused.

Vista Help says

Choosing a network location

There are three network locations: Home, Work, and Public place.

Home or Work

Choose one of these locations for home or small office networks when you know and trust the people and devices on the network. Network discovery, which allows you to see other computers and devices on a network and allows other network users to see your computer, is on by default.

Public place

Choose this location for networks in public places (such as coffee shops or airports). This location is designed to keep your computer from being visible to other computers around you and to help protect your computer from any malicious software from the Internet. Network discovery is turned off for this location.

I chose Public originally as, like most people at home, I would want to connect to the internet!!??

I don't want to have to unplug the internet lead and change the Location type every time I want to look at the local network, and then change it back again for the 'net - I'm bound to forget once or get it back to front!

Any advice, please.

It was the purple bit that did it!

Might get 98 running in a VM for a bit of fun.
I can think of a couple of old games that may just be the excuse to do it :P

Should go like stink given a core of the Quad and 256mb of ram to play with.

Thanks Dave.

I tried a "few things" (didn't make good notes!), but I decided to delete all the Clients, Adapters, and Protocols in the Control Panel> Network box, and rebooted :w00t:

I reinstalled the Ethernet Adapter with the motherboard disc and some system files from W98 disk, and rebooted again.

I got the same window (as the 2nd one above) pop up, so I took a guess at putting in "password"! , no domain workgroup name was there so I added WORKGROUP as it wouldn't go ahead without something! I then got the same window as first popped up above and then Windows desktop booted up.

I went to Control Panel-> Network and I've just clicked properties of Client for Microsoft Networks, and deselected "Log on validation to Windows NT domain".

I'll see what happens then on reboot, but first some grub!! :D

Edit : forgot....and made sure Primary Network Logon was "Windows Logon" not "Client for Microsoft Networks" - which it said in a book I've got which isn't very good!!

Edit : Fed and watered and happy, as it is working now. It may be just that last bit above in purple that did it!!

So if you have the same problem this may cure it - but I expect everyone else gave up on W98 years ago!! not so

I've not tinkered with 98 for years so I don't know the solution.
But the problem appears to be that it thinks it's part of a network domain.

In 2000 / XP you'll find the workgroup or domain dialog in the Properties of My Computer, Computer Name tab.
You want to take it out of a domain and into a workroup - the same one that your other PCs are in.

W98 Networking problem (password?)

I have a new laptop and haven't used the old W98 desktop for some time.

I turned the W98 desktop on again I remembered it popped up with some windows screens at start-up, which it didn't before I started trying to do networking things with it a few months ago.

The first one said " Microsoft Networking - No domain server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources". Buttons --> OK - Cancel

I pushed the return key as I don't know any password!

The next one was "Enter Network Password - Enter Your network password for Microsoft Networking. -- Username my PC ----password box - blank, and Domain Workgroup. Save the password box ticked. Buttons --> OK - Cancel.

I pushed the return key, it popped up another window I think it was like the first and it went into W98 OK.

The desktop doesn't see anything. I want to see the desktop on my laptops network, over the router connection and vice versa; and connect to the internet with both. Vista Laptop is working OK! hence my post! The desktop used to use dial up, which isn't connected anymore.

I downloaded SIW to a USB drive to see if I could see the Password, but only found my old dial up ones on the desktop.

Any ideas what I can do to try and get it working?
