Hello.

My Compaq laptop will not connect to my network.It is wireless,it will see the SSID,but hangs when trying to connect.
All it says is Acquiring network address.

Please can anyone help again,cheers

I thought they had stopped needing MAC address, but that's the only thing that would solve my mates dilemma.

They have been messing about a lot recently, my speed has varied up and down.
They stopped needing a mac address some time last year, just you can only have one NIC connected. If you swap over to a different machine, you need to power cycle the modem before it will work.

Thanks for the reply again.

So the Physical Address listed via IPCONFIG /ALL is my computers MAC address.

Ok then,that means I have two other MAC's,my VIRGIN modem and the router.

Should they have the modem MAC listed already,and if i phone to have the router MAC added to their table,will this mean that each time I connect I will be able to install the Router without using the PC's MAC ???

What happens if I buy another Router,will I have to phone VIRGIN before I install???.Sorry for asking yet more questions.I would like to go into the conversation with them knowing a little more.

Yes,I went to Cribbs and bought another Router,I wrongly assumed that the router was at fault because I could connect to the net with the modem,with the router connected no chance.

The new router had the same problem,so it went back.

I would like to know how many replacements routers were sold,and possible returned:D

What you have there is the settings for your PC, not the router.

I am in the Bristol area and had a visit from a mate with exactely the same problem as you.
He had been told by Virgin to contact Belkin as the router must be at fault.
He tried Belkns 24/7 helpline, no-one there...
So he came round to see me as he thought it a mighty coincidence that the router died at the same time his Virgin connection did ;)

Told him to find out the routers MAC Address (its always on a sticker underneath, at worst connect to the router itself via a browser) and phone Virgin and tell them to put the address in their tables.
At first they said they couldn't do anything, but Alan stuck to his guns and guess what?

I guess sales of cable routers in the BS postcode over this weekend are going to smash all records.
How many of those would have gone to PC Spit at Cribbs and be spun another load of old tosh about 802.11N I wonder?
Then, like you, get home and it still doesn't work :w00t:

Makes my blood boil.

May i ask another question please?..

I have just taken a screen image of the routers basic settings,
MAC ADDRESS
IP ADDRESS
DHCP
IP SUBNET MASK

All this was obtained via IPCONFIG /ALL

With this info can I manually set up the router in future without using the setup wizard?.

Its 6 or 7 years since I was on Telewest cable.
I thought they'd stopped making you register mac addresses, but it seems not.

What you have done is the best option, get the router to spoof your (registered) PCs mac address.

Update,

Just phoned VIRGIN tech support,he was very helpful.

The problem was addressed,but he said it was probably their fault,as the router MAC address was not being recognized at their end?.

We used the PC's MAC address,and the router now connects to the internet.On the Netgear set up wizard I used 'Use this MAC address '

It is annoying me,that I buy a new router or have to reinstall again,I will not be able to follow the simple NETGEAR setup wizard.

Your thoughts please on this solution.

Hi,

Yesterday Virgin had technical issues in my local area,Bristol.

I could not connect to the internet.Today I can,but only with my NETGEAR Router disconnected .

I reinstalled the Router,still no connection.The message you have limited or no connectivity appears.

I thought the Router had failed,so I bought another NETGEAR Router,the same message appears with this one.

Like I said,with both Routers connected,problems,without all fine.

According to the VIRGIN status page,there are still some issues in Bristol,could this cause problems for my Router when It try's to connect???.
