A little advice please

Hi guys.

My wife has just started up a new business and wants a web site. So she has tasked me with sorting it out (lucky me!!).

Could any one out there give me some advice and tips for building a site and choosing a host.

Are any of the site builders that come with packages any good? does one host have a better package?

Any advice will be greatly received.

DNS record directed to sub directory on webserver?

Hi all,

Been having some difficulty with this so here i am to beg knowledge from wiser heads.

To put you in the picture:
Im trying to allow users access to webstatistics for their domain via a custom HTML/CSS template. Giving them access to the standard control panels on the server allows them access to *everything* & so licence to wreak havoc with their domain.

What i want to do is give them this access, but then restrict the user interface that they only have links to view the web stats. I've created the template, & am happy with it - from the web stats section the user can reach nothing important.

However when accessing the control panel (via cp.domain.com) they land initially on an info page, showing DNS names & other things i'd rather keep private, from there you click a link "Stats" which directs to: cp.domain.com/stats.cp

What i want to do is setup the DNS so that a record say: stats.domain.com translates to cp.domain.com/stats.cp, ive tried typing the full URL directly in & it takes you via a login direct to the stats page - exactly the way i want, but i dont want the users having to remember that full URL, as no doubt they will forget at cp.domain.com & end up on the info page - which im trying to avoid.

Is there any way to do this in DNS?

Is there any good simple site buildin programs that i can play with. Ive been lookin an im gettin lost an abit confused.

All i want do is add photos, maybe a few helpful links, blog or something like that an maybe something to let friends leave messages...

Hi all,
Recently built a website for some friends using Webplus X2, however need a good freebie program that they can use to edit the sites content with afterwards.
I found Webplus SE a free cut down version, but cant get it to open the original X2 site files, or import plain html pages without upgrading to a paid version.

Does anyone know how to import into SE, or know of a good simplistic alternative?

Hi all,

Setting the scene .....

I currently use my work email (my company blocks hotmail/gmail etc.) to sign up to websites/shopping sites etc., so that I can access email confirmations, invoices etc.

Thing is - I'd rather not do this, since signing up for some of these websites means that I'm forever spammed (since some unscrupulous people obviously sell my email address on).

I have an unused domain, and would like to be able to set up as many mail accounts as I like (using that domain - so amazon@mydomain.co.uk, micromart@mydomain.co.uk etc.) - but still be able to get access to all the mailboxes from work.

So ... I probably need a host that will allow unlimited pop3 mailboxes, and some software to host on my domain that I can use to access those mailboxes. The idea being I can go to www.mydomain.co.uk/mymail, authenticate, and then read/respond to all my mail.

Am I going about things the right way here? If yes (or even no!) - what hosts out there would provide me with a cheap hosting service to do this?

I have a couple of sites on Joomla platforms and have just in the past week managed to "kill" one entirely through applying an upgrade errantly. I'm now in the process of trying to work through a fix provided by a tech on their forum, but am curious - he's suggested that I create an empty database into which I install a new version of the platform which I've done. But rather than then just importing my backups into this, he's told me to restore them into a 2nd database and once I've got all my platform as close to the original setup as possible re. components/modules etc, to then just change the references in the configuration file to point to the restored backup database. I've no problem undertaking the instructions but am just curious about why it needs to be done this way, and more importantly, before I undertake it, what are my chances of succeeding with it? I'm asking this here rather than on the Joomla forum partly because of a recommendation from my brother to do so (we're both avid readers of the mag), and also because it's possibly a question that would pertain to any and all CMS type platforms. Anyone able to outline how the platform uses any database and/or provide me with a good "training" manual for me to learn more about how they work.

Email 'Push' Servers

I have NTL broadband and and NTL email address. I also have a mobile phone on the 3 network which I want to be able to send emails from but NTL don't allow you to send emails unless you are connected through their services. And finally, I have a server runnung from my home 24/7.

Right, my question is ....
Is there a way to setup my server at home so that I can relay emails through it and use my NTL account? ... and while I'm doing that, is there an email server which can notify my mobile phone of emails arriving without it having to check constantly?

Sorry, for the very specific question but I'm sure parts of it apply to other people aswell.

Migrating Guestbook

For a while I have been hosting my site on free webspace, and used smartgb as the guestbook.

I've now move to a paid for service, which includes various scripts etc. including a guestbook, and was thinking of substituting the free one for my own. Before I do any more, is there any easy way that anyone knows of to import the smartgb guestbook into my own?

Hi there,

we're currently hosting with lunarpages and whilst they score high on the "review" sites, we're looking to move from their servers. Basically there are times when our site isn't available and won't connect via ftp, and at other times the site is painfully slow - both of which will be bad for business when we launch.

I've also been with ixwebhosting and am less than impressed with what they have to offer.

So, despite being fully paid up with lunarpages, I'm looking for a good webhost that I can rely on to keep my site fast and accessible. Has anyone got any suggestion?

I'm setting up a forum website, but given the scale of the thing (it's brand new, no existing members, nothing like that) I can't justify paying for a vBulletin/IPBoard licence or anything like that.

Therefore my choice is pretty much between SMF and phpBB3. Any thoughts?

where to buy a domain name

I'm planning to get the domain space with "HostMonster.com" as they're unlimited bandwidth and space etc.. but I can't buy a .co.uk domain name through them. so now I have to try and find somewhere just to buy the name and then I assume I just transfer it across to hostmonster but there's a few issues I've come across:

I've bought names before from 1&1 as they were cheap but they've decided to bump their prices up for the second year (more than they orrigionally advertised). of course, I don't have to accept this price increase but if i don't, I lose the name. I'm not that bothered about this as I don't need the names anyway but I don't want to come across the same problem with a domain name I really want to keep. Another problem I've heard about is the ease of which you can transferr the names. I've heard people mention that it's a massive pain to transferr from some sites (ie 1&1 again). I'm not really sure what's involved in transfering the name, when I transfer it, does that mean the I pay the place it's transfered to for the name or do I keep paying the orrigional people i bought it from?

so what I'm looking for is a reasonably priced domain name seller who is not going to give me grief in the future and is easy to transfer. There's so many places out there though, it's become a bit of a headache and if they are going to muck me about, they don't always advertise it in an easy to find spot. Can anyone here recomend someone for me? also, is there any pitfalls I need to be aware of when buying space and a name?

Hi guys, does anyone know how (using frontpage 2003) i can add to my current website a username and password box so people can sign up to my site and when they log in, they reach their own personal web page.
Basically i am running a computer repair company and each repair that i do, the customer will register on my website, when they login, they will reach a personal page with information about their past repairs, a list of downloads for their computer such as latest drivers etc.
Can anyone let me know how its done or talk me through it?

Hi guys, just building my own web page using front page 2003 and i put in a feedback form which basically emails me the comment when the user fills in the text boxses and click on submit, except i get the following error message when i try it out after i uploaded it onto my web page.

problems with my browser

i've been playing with Visual C# express edition and a magazine called 'Code It' from the magazine Linux Format, while been very helpfull and showing me the basic of programming i have hit a stumbling block.

i have followed a project to make a web browser using the program above, i have succesfully finished it to useable levels (i am typing this with it). my problem is that i would like to put in tabbed browsing (i have grown used to it in Firefox now) and cant figure out how to get it working !!!

i have tried to follow online guides i have found without sucess, so any help is very much appreciated :D

Need to convert String to Integer

Ok I know this is probably very very easy but I can't find the command to change a string to an integer as far as vbscript is concerned. Have Tried Cint but that gives type mismatch. My code is below am pulling a text sttring (time) from a database, splittign it then adding it to another time ( Takeoff + Duration = land) Just need the command to convert the string to integer please. Do not need whole chunk of code writing as it has to do this 116 time per row of table so trying to do stuff in a set way.

Hope some-one knows the answer to this simple question. The general idea is in the code below.

Was wondering if it is possible to set a link to open in IE and only IE no matter what browser it is being viewed in.

I want to do this so I can click a link on my website to open IE with an FTP link. I will be the only one using this link (for now) but just wondering if it is possible, either through Javascript or something else?

I'm thinking of using an online web building service for a small limited site. I have looked at Web eden which is offering 50MB, 6GB of monthly bandwidth for £24.99 per year. I do not know or even wish to know how to build a site, therefore it has to be this type of service.

email links broken due to avg removal?

hi all,had cause to remove AVG from my pute the other.Anyhow having had trouble in removing (had to use a uninstaller:w00t:) i now find that when im on my website if i click a email link i get a error message saying avg missing dll befor it goes to email page? havent a clue how to rectify this at the moment and i was rather hoping for a heads up by some of you more experienced folks please.

Iam wanting to build a website but have no programming skills yet, first really there's a particular name I would like to 'own'.

What is the best way to this? Can I buy the name or domain? i.e www.abcdef.co.uk then a host?

Is there a particular host you can recommend, my main purpose will be photos and information, then I wish to add a forum at a later date...I trust this will be too advanced for me to do at this stage? :)

Me and a friend have decided that it would be a good idea for us to start up a tech site, so far we have been posting a few reviews and we have a selection of software which we recommend etc. etc.
i was really just going to ask you guys what you think, if there is anything we could do to make the site look a bit better or if you could through some ideas around that would be so very helpfull
we are both out of ideas already and are wondering if using Synthasite was such a good idea.

so, generally working on my website while in a lecture at uni last month, get home, and go to upload all my hard work and what to i find?

a lovely error message saying "page not found"

why? i hear you ask, well it just so happens my registrar has gone bust, closed down his servers and hasnt bothered telling a soul! and guess which muppet doesnt hava a backup of his website? yup! me! all emails bounce back, their own website is down, and they are really starting to piss me off!

Recently, web design has took my fancy and I'm interested to learn more about it. I understand the absolute basics of HTML, and I would assume this is where most beginners are told to begin.

Although I understand I will have to expand my knowlegde of HTML greatly, but I need a little help on starting.

I haven't tested this with IE 6 because I haven't got a copy on my but as you can see it screws up only in IE every other browser i've tested its works perfectly so any ideas?

I have a website, and what i want to do is embed a javascript code that will control my minimized WMP. Is this possible?

This is not embedded music. I want it to actually control my windows media player via a website.

I've tried googling and searching on various other sites with no luck, only ways to use javascript to contol embedded music, not extrenal.

parents personalized email trouble

We have just moved our ISP to talktalk and my parents have now got new emails (we previously had pipex emails) my dad hates giving out new telephone no's email addys etc so on a friends advice he bought a domain www.thebrowngang.co.uk from 123 reg as they offered 5 free emails. what dad didn't realize is that this was simply email forwarding! lol.

i explained this to him and he did not like the sound of it and said he wants an actual email account he can use from outlook.

now i've done all this b4 when i had my own site but i bought a whole domain/webspace package!

so my question is this:

do we need to buy a whole webhosting package to do this or is there another way?

i did point out that u can use companies like hotmail and bluebottle but dad was having none of it! :D

i would also like to incorporate some sort of search function so visitors can search for an item based on tags that I would add for each mixtape, is there any way for me to do this?

Im hosting using www.one.com and just use one of their templates for my site at the moment and dont know whether to use another program to create it from scratch or what.
