They said it was a good idea, and so the team was started. It started out small as these things do but with in a few short weeks and a couple of small mentions in the illustrious MicroMart magazine it has grown to the team we have now, Which at the time of writing this is 79,

Now some of the team are racers and some of the team are pacers, let me explain. The racers as I call then are the team members who like to like to try and be the top of the table, these people have the most work units and normally the fastest PC's
The pacers are the main stay of the team they dont race, they pace, just plodding along producing work unit after work unit, these team members are very important as they make up the vast majority, and without them and there combined input the team would not be where it is today.

So weather your a racer , a pacer or somewhere in between again welcome to the team.there are a few sticky's at he top of this forum to help you get your folding @ home clients set up and running. Tom Morton has made some nice signature banners, some with just team stats for pacers and some with positions within the team for racers, heres a link to the thread http://forum.micromart.co.uk/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=52&MessageID=75943&TopicPage=7. these of course are not compulsory or in fact needed but are a bit of fun.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this, and for interest in the MicroMart-UK folding team.

So please all new members leave a short post in this thread to say hi.

PS.when you start folding you name will not appear in the team lists until you finish your first work unit,so please be patient, also the first work unit seems for some strange reason to take longer than all the units that follow.

Happy Folding

500,000 for jools

congrats mate :D:D

Project 2665 Wu's

Does anyone know of a way to stop these Project 2665 wu's from running on the smp client? (tip supplied by tighthead) Some motherboards will require VT (Vanderpool Technology) to be enabled in their BIOS in order to run Virtualisation

1. head to VMware and download a copy of the VMware server installation file from http://www.vmware.com/download/server/

. click on the download now link for vmware server 1.0.5 and agree to the terms .Then download the master installer file for vmware for windows.

2 head to http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html and register to obtain your free serial number one per console to be installed.

3. head to http://isv-image.ubuntu.com/vmware/ and download the harddisc image that you want to use. The files here are the virtual machines hard disc files with the OS already installed on them so saves some hassle later on.For Ubuntu use

http://isv-image.ubuntu.com/vmware/Ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.zip

4. whilst thats downloading you can then install the VMware server.

   - run the installer file you downloaded in step 1

   - select complete install and ignore the warning about IIS being missing.

   - Select an install location or use the default .

   - A lot of guides say to answer 'yes' to disable the autorun but I found that doing this prevented me installing an alternative Linux distro either via the .iso or from a live cd.As you are using a pre installed os it doesn't really matter whether you answer 'yes' or 'no'.

   - Click 'install' and wait whilst VMware installs.

   - Then you will have to enter the serial number that you downloaded in step 2.

   - Then click finish to exit the installer.

5. Open the Virtual disk zip file that you downloaded in step 3 and drag the contents of the virtual disk drive to c:\\virtual machines .(correct step pointed out by Phitore)

edit: Tighthead has installed to his E: drive and had a virtual machines folder appear on both his E: and C: drives. Drag the contents to the virtual machines folder that you will be using as you tell vmware where its hard disc is in step 6.

6. Launch the Vmware Server Console by double clicking the icon on the desktop.

edit: clicking in the display area gets you 'into the VM' and the vm's mouse will then be active. To get back to the windows desktop you have to press <ctrl><Alt>.

- select 'local host' to connect to. This option may not initially be available and you may have to give the server a bit of time to display it.

- click the 'new virtual machine ' icon

- click next on the first wizard window

- select Linux on the guest OS window and from the dropdown menu 'ubuntu 64 bit' then click next

- on the next screen , choose a name for the VM and click on browse and navigate to the folder you created in step 5 containing your virtual hard disc.

- on the next screen choose NAT as your network type

7. edit: at the hard disk size window , I went with the default 8GB option.

- then click finish

8. on the main vmware server console window ,

- click 'configure host' . (tip added after feedback from tighthead) If you don't see this on the main screen you can click on the 'home' tab and a list of options comes for installing and configuring VM's. If you have more than 1 VM running clicking on a VM's tab will then let you right click on the display area to access that VM's settings. The stop suspend and resume icons apply to the VM that has the display.

- click the memory tab. allow 800MB per VM you want to run and drag the slider that amount .

- click 'OK'

9. Along the top of the console window. Click on 'VM' then choose the settings menu option.

- click on memory and allocate 800MB to that machine. EDIT: I'm on the allow some ram to be swapped option just incase its needed.

- check that ethernet is NAT

- check that 2 processors is chosen , if not click the 2 processor option.

10. Click on the green right arrow near the top of the console to start the virtual machine and the machine should boot up into an Ubuntu desktop. The username and password for this installation is ubuntu

EDIT: password corected

11.Once you have an Ubuntu desktop , click on the Firefox icon and check that you have internet access available. At this stage , you may want to download any updates that are available, especially if you plan to experiment with Ubuntu as a platform. EDIT: (tip from Tighthead) make sure that your caps lock key is ON else keypad numbers come out weird.

- Navigate with firefox to stanford's linux download page and download the Linux SMP client and it will be saved to your desktop.

- click on 'places' on the ubuntu taskbar, then on 'home'

- right click , and on the menu that comes up 'create new folder' and create a folder called folding.

- drag the smp client download from the desktop to this folding folder

-right click on the SMP client download file and in the menu select 'extract here'-

- rename the folder created by the extraction process to FAH.

EDIT: I haven't installed vmtools, but you could do at this stage if you wanted . I think that they work with Ubuntu , but I know that they don't work with XUbuntu.

12. on the taskbar, start a terminal window via applications -->accessories --> terminal.<enter> means hit return/enter key on the keyboard.

-type in the terminal window

         sudo apt-get install ia32-libs<enter>

         ubuntu<enter> at the password prompt

         'y' to continue when prompted

-wait for the ia32-libs to install.

EDIT: an alternative way to install ia32-libs is to click on ubuntu taskbar system-->administration--> synaptic package manager . enter ubuntu as the password and then scroll down in the list of available packages until you get to ia32-libs.mark it for installation and install it.(not done it this way so this is theoretical)

- now to create a shortcut, still in the terminal type

nano startfah<enter> (a text editor window will come up into which you type)

        cd ~/folding/FAH<enter>

        ./fah6 -smp -forceasm -verbosity 9<enter>

now press control X and a message to save changes will come up .

Press Y and then press <enter> ( the text editor window will close and in the terminal window type)

       chmod +x startfah

Edit: in this last step , Planeman had the client crashing , but cured it by removing the -forceasm flag (only report i've had of this).

13. at this stage anybody wanting to run 2 linux vms and has more than 2 GB of ram can copy the virtual machine folder and call it ubuntu2 which will save a lot of duplication of effort. Then just add a new client as you did before at step 6.

14. In a terminal window type

        cd ~/folding/FAH <enter>

        ./fah6 -smp -configonly<enter>

then you enter the config details as for any client. Type no to the use advmethods prompt as the new core which that will download is massively memory hungry and quite slow as a result in a VM. If you are running two VMs you will have to do this again for the other VM so that you can give it a different machine ID.

15. To run the linux client, now or any time in the future , open a terminal window and type

./startfah<enter> and the folding client will be launched.

16. back in windows , once the linux VM is running, open the task manager and set affinity for the vmware-vmx.exe to cores 0 and 1 as they are both on the same die and run faster than splitting across two dies. Then you can start the windows SMP client and I leave it so that it can access all 4 cores so that it will mop up any spare cycles that the linux VM doesnt use.
UPDATE: I've been experimenting a bit and seem to have found that the best overall PPD seems to be with the linux VM set to use cores 0,1 and then set the affinity for the four windows SMP processes to 0,2 :1,2 :0,3 : and 1,3. Do not use 0,1 for a windows SMP if you are running the VM with 0,1 as your windows SMP will slow drasticallly as they wait for the 0,1 thread to use its few cycles left used by the VM. When I tried that it went to over an hour per step instead of approx 15 mins per step.
17. guinea pigs have posted to say yes it worked and theirsuggestions have been incorporated and credited and anybody else can now feel safe in attempting it.

tips for a Quad folding.

Since I got my quad I've experimented with various methods to achieve the best production.Initially, I went down the two virtual machines running ubuntu and a linux SMP client. This was fine to start with, but with only 2 GB the new cores created problems as the virtual machines did not have enough memory to run efficiently and were hammering the swap file which drastically slowed the folding down. From 14mins per step per VM to 40 mins per step per VM. Giving the VM's more memory didnt help as xp became starved of RAM and hammered the swap file as well giving similar results. The only solution to the 2 VM route is to have 3GB of ram available so that each VM can have 1GB each.
Next I tried the Windows SMP route.. This got down to 11 mins per step or about 18hours per WU and I was completing just over 1 per day. Then out of interest , I ran windows SMP and a linux SMP on 1 Virtual Machine. I set the affinity on the linux VM to the 2 cores it starts up on, and then start the windows SMP with no affinity. The linux VM is taking 14 mins per step and the windows SMP is taking 16 mins per step , so that by this method i'm getting nearly 2 WU's per day completed and quite a substantial boost to points production.

With the linux SMP I have set advmethods to no when I configured it as this prevents downloading the new core which is such a memory hog and quite a slow folder ( although AMD cpus with their integrated memory controller apparently love it), and included the forceasm flag.

Whether this tip will help you or not depends on how long your machine is running and if it is just folding or doing other stuff as well. You will need to be folding at least 9 hours per day with the quad flat out in order to make the deadlines .My quad is overclocked to 2.875 Ghz and this tip has increased my average PPD from 2308 to 3392 which is about a 47% increase.
EDIT: another benefit is that the linux client doesn't use up all the cpu cycles available so having the windows client access all 4 cores uses those spare cycles. As the windows client is only using the 'idle' cycles the machine is still responsive as when you wantt to do something else it frees up the cpu cycles for your other tasks.

Buzzcut saws past 100,000

Congratulations.

AMBER vs GROMACS

Just a quick question :)

How can i specify (using WinFAH.exe) that i want to fold AMBER cores only?
Finished my first core over the w/end n now i'm folding a GROMACS
Which is taking approx 17mins a frame (compared to 30sces i was getting with the AMBER)??

Any pointers will be most helpful, i'm using the Windows GUI 5.03 version. So far I've turned in my first WU (a nice 192 points to start the day) and am working on my second.

Now then, the questions I have:
I'm using FAHmon to watch the progress of it. I quite like the display that you can look at. Does this slow the folding down at all?

Secondly, the Display is very jerky, is it meant to do this? I know on the PS3 it is a smooth movement, is it different on the GPUs?

Thirdly, the numbers that the display gives is variable. Sometimes the performance and time left numbers will dissapear. Just before it does that, the time left jumps up from an OK looking (and tallying with FAHMon) 2 hours to 4+ hours. Is the display still a work in progress?

Otherwise, it's good to be back and folding fairly competitively (1600PPD if I fold 24/7!)

Work Units with out points!!

I'm running the virtual SMP client a single core client and the GPU client all have finished at least four work units in the last two days but I have got no points from any of the work units! All the units are compleating sucsesfuly and are being sent off, the single core client sends the work units off a bit slowly but it gets there in the end!

Any ideas?

Thought i'd stop by for a bit :o)

Hi fellow folders ;)
After a bit of an absence, The 'S3 ViRGE' (one of our finer retro graphic accelerators) has returned to the team :D
Due to moving to smaller flat, had to reorganize my rig collection somewhat... My main rig, the Q6600, wont be folding for much longer, but the P4 (rig 3) and one or two others i have up my sleeve, will continue to fold.
Lookin forward to getting the 500,000 points :cool:

Dont know what i'm doing with console version

Hi Guys

I have the console version running on 3 pc's and I was wondering why my points where slowing down when I am checking using Fahmon it doesnt seem to show much and I couldnt see any points.

I think it wasnt even running on two machines even through it is set as a service and the date had passed by the looks of it, so I used fah504-console delete 01 to delete the WU and was hoping it would begin again as I want to machines to run right.

How can I check they are running right?

Columbo

Laptop folding.

I decided to increase my output a little and get the laptops folding. Although dual core they are only doing 1 unit each but it's better than nothing.

More importantly I was worried it may kill my batteries but the option to only fold while on mains input only works brilliantly. Hopefully I will get a lot more points as both the laptops are on for long periods all day. :)

Edit: What has happened to Dr Jon? I was thinking of keeping one for myself and buying a very basic AMD rig just to run the card as a GPU cruncher. The GPU's are passively cooled types. Is it worth the expense?

I came up with a system that would cost around £100 using parts I have a bundle deal from CCL but was wondering if the points to power consumption would be good?

Was thinking I could possibly use the machine as a media centre as well. But then I'd have to buy better components.
What'd you reckon?

Affinity, affinity they all got it in for me.

Hi guys

Just would like the clarify a few things mainly setting affinity across four cores on a quad. It has been suggested in other posts that two Linux distros under VMWare should have affinity set to 0 & 1 core, therefore one core each. Then a windows SMP set to use 2 & 3 cores.

So in summary 2 virtual Linux SMP's and 1 native SMP under XP, three SMP's running together.

Is this right.

Fuzzy-Felt Bloke :) :)

Hitch running SMP client?

Started a new WU on my Linux VMware SMP client this morning. Checking the log, I noticed a "Timered checkpoint triggered" entry after each completed step and then an extra 3 or 4 minute delay before "writing local files" and the completed confirmation comes up. The bad news is that you are not getting the best points per day out of your machine. The good news is that you could virtually double your points per day and literally zoom up the table by following this tutorial on folding tips with a quad. The improved production of points comes about because the windows SMP client is not very efficient and has lots of wait states while the cores synchronize..the linux client is a lot more efficient and hence produces more points .

With your particular machine you will probably get the best points per day by using two Linux Virtual machines and allocating 1.2 MB of ram to each VM. If you then want to do something intensive in windows you can just pause one or both of the VM's.

Alternatively you could go down the 1 VM and 1 windows SMP route that is described further down the tutorial.

Hope this tip helps you (and us ) .

Linux Folding

Does anyone out there have any experience with folding using the SMP client of which distros are the fastest for folding SMP either Virtual or "Real".

Also does anyone know of virtualisation software that works with vista and can support more than one core so I can SMP virtual fold.

Many thanks in advance.

GPU client stopped

I went away for 2 weeks and came back to find my living room strangely quiet...

Turns out the GPU client for th X1xxx series has expired and the Stanford team aren't going to do anything with it.

Well, that makes my main Windows box completely redundant now :(

Name on a bunny

Guys..
