welcome to the team. 800MB per VM used to be the recommendation but the new A2 cores need more memory otherwise the client will constantly be paging memory slowing down the folding. You really need at least 1GB per VM and then some memory left over for windows and vm ware to run.

A work around is to only request small work units but may end up with no WU's being processed.

The GPU1 client, the client for the X1900 series of graphics cards, was discontinued a while back so you won't be able to put that to use for folding sadly. :crying:

You are probably going to have to give it some more as some of the Work Units have huge memory demands.

Hi all,

Just like to say hi, i have been a subscriber to MM for almost 1 year now, and about to resubscribe shortly.

I am not new to distributed or grid computing projects, indeed i started off with distributed net in about 2000 maybe a bit before in the prof. challis UK team, i really lost interest as the team was CIX centric and moved their forum into CIX private space which effectively isolated me from the team, once rc72 started i moved to their optimum golomb ruler project but my interest waned somewhat, i then toyed a bit with grid.org, THINK, and F@H but the early clients caused much trouble with my hardware so was quickly put to one side. After several years I again dabbled with other distributed projects via the BOINC frontend for UK BOINC team although the forum was more involving the team was diffused over the projects so i left that too. I just am so intrigued by the whole massively parrparalleld computing scene that i wanted to join a team that was focused as well as thriving and most importantly UK based, so here i am. :D

My computer network is reduced somewhat in size (main pc athlonAthlon00+, athlonAthlon0+ - 10TB fileserver, mac powerbook) but with me finally finishing off my house building antics by christmas and my house flood wired with cat5 (24 ports around the house and garage), i am looking to increase the scope around my property so more computers will undoubundoubtedlyining my stats in the future.

I have moved from testing the stability of the single core windows F@H client over 3 days and have just installed vmware and ubuntu lUbuntuo run F@H in smp, seems to be working fine on both cores - is 500MB of virtual RAM enough for F@H to be running or do i need to give it some more ? I think the answer is no, but ill ask anyway - F@H GPU client will no longer work on a radeon x1950 gfx card ?

I am folding under the nick - davehemm but writing here as davehemm2 as no matter how many times i requested the website to send out a validation email to my virgin.net address (davehemm) i never received anything, so i will be writing here as davehemm2 as my googlemail address worked first time.

In my spare time (when i have any) i am totally addicted to guild wars (>7500h in 30months), any other spare time is devoted to UK comics, music and films.

I'm currently running :

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 (not O/C)
ATI HD3870 512 (not O/C)
4GB OCZ Platinum RAM

Hmm I am running vista ultimate 64 bit with both the gpu and cpu clints running fine, i am not a folding techie either.

Hi Guys, glad to be a part of this honourable enterprise finally, folding name Fuzzy14.

Had a bit of a weird experience during the setup/configuration of the console client. Firstly the options were not quite as they're documented here, which is fine as they're close enough, but half way through them on hitting return to go on to the next option it took me straight to the end:unsure:

The console client does seem to be working though as my first unit has been finished and sent - :)

I can't seem to get Electron Microscope anywhere, does it still exist as a download? If not, any recommendations for a monitor?

Folding on the ps3 is easy and can achieve ~950 PPD

And as for your other machine, you could run either the GPU client or SMP clients. My guess is that you will achieve more points using the GPU client since your CPU is 'only' a dual core.

Edit - Just noticed you have an opteron rig too. That should be ok to run the SMP client on. It all depends on how long you intend you have the machines running.

I use to run the GPU1 client and a GUI client at the same time 6 months back and I suffered no problems.

I think you might be able to do this yourself by changing the Machine ID in the GPU2 client to a different number.

By default, it is set at 1 and the GUI client's default will most likely be 1 too.

[u]Note:[/u] I'm not 100% sure if you can change the Machine ID in the GPU2 client

So far I have done a couple of units using the Gui client on one core which seemed to take quite a while.

Downloaded the latest Gpu2 client last night and my 3650 blasted through a 200 point work unit in no time and it seemed to work fine initially with the Gui client running in the back ground.

However, when I turned the machine back on this morning I got a message saying I shouldn't be running two clients at the same time and the Gui client was shut down.

I would like to continue running the Gpu2 client but do you know if this has any adverse effects on the Graphics card? Surely running the graphics card at near 100% for hours on end can't be good for it.

Any info on such matters would be really helpful.:)

The GUI client will only utilize one core but it can use both if you run two instances of the GUI client.

If you wanted to, you can try using the SMP client or the GPU2 client which will bring in alot more points.
I would recommend using the GPU2 client in your case.

System is a E4400 running at stock speed on Asrock 4Core Dual Vsta Board with 2 Gigs of 675mhz Corsair XMS2 Ram. Graphics card is a ATI Sapphire 3650 GDDR3 512MB.

Downloaded the GUI client for now but may switch to the console client when I learn more about it. Is it possible to utilise both cores with the GUI client or not?

Hey, can you help me out with my signature, it shows no stats as you can see? Also I can't find an entry for my username on the folding website. It makes me wonder if I've set it up correctly? I simply ran the file I downloaded from a command prompt and answered the questions appropriately. It's running as a service on my machine and has been since about 8am this morning.
