I have a bt homehub and my pc is wirelessly connected to it. I can play every game i want over the internet using the wireless apart from BF2. Now as i really want to play this its getting rather annoying.

The problem is i get a message saying "There is a problem with your connection" every so often. Well actually quite often. It only lasts for about 5 seconds but can be a terrible annoyance.

Also when my dad connects his laptop wirelessly to the homehub and i connect my pc wirelessly the speed can drastically fall.

What i was wondering was if i could connect two wireless routers together using an ethernet cable. As i have been offered a belkin Wireless G+ Router for a fraction of the price, and i can test it before i buy it. More specifically this one. I was thinking that my dad could connect to the homehub and i would connect to the belkin hopefully keeping the speed of the network up and hopefully also this wireless router wouldn't keep telling me about connection problems when i try to play BF2 online.

So my main questions are:

Can i connect two wireless routers together using an ethernet cable?
How would i go about doing this, is there any settings i would have to change?
and also do you think this router will help the connection problems i keep getting on BF2?

Also i've just found out that for some reason the internet isnt being picked up when i plug an ethernet cable in. Does anybody know why the wireless adaptor is working but the ethernet port isnt. i thought windows automatically installed ethernet drivers on startup.

Thanks

Jamie:D

very slow broadband on laptop

i wanted advice on getting a faster connection on my laptop. even when i know the broadband is running fine as i have been upstairs on the main pc that is wirelessly connected, the laptop downstairs that is wirelessly connected to the router takes ages to connect to some sites. i have read about unscrewing the standard wireless aerial and screwing in a better/bigger/stronger aerial.

any ideas where to get these?

Wireless MFD recommendation

Hiya!

A mate has asked my opinion on choosing a multi-function printer/scanner/copier (fax not required). It performs flawlessly when using the setup on the 250Gb Western Digital drive that it shipped with, even after performing a system recovery from the recovery partition.

However, I wanted to install a faster hard drive so have fitted a Seagate momentus 7200rpm 200Gb hard drive. I created a recovery DVD and used this recover the laptop with the Seagate HD installed. Now the wifi connection keeps dropping, despite the laptop being literally less than a foot from the router and showing a 100% five bar signal strength just before the connection is lost. The connection comes and goes. Everything apart from wifi seems to perform perfectly. Uninstalling the wifi cards driver and allowing Windows to reinstall it does not help. As a test I changed the hard drive to a 160Gb western digital model that I have and "recovered" the factory installation to it and it showed the same problems.

I have upgraded to Vista XP1 but this has not helped.

I have replaced the router but the problems persist. I can connect to the router flawlessly with my Asus EEE PC.

I wonder if anyone has any idea as to what the problem could be or what I could do to find out? As I'd used XP to set up wireless network 'BEAR', I'd saved those settings to my USB stick and plugged that into laptop - laptop said it didn't like it and couldn't use it. Ho hum.

So I went back into the web-based wireless network configurator, turned off some setting (pah! can I remember? my brain is made of stuffing) and lost the complete internet connection. Fantastic.
One 10 minute call to Virgin Broadband's helpful helpline (i don't begrude paying the dosh when someone is really helpful and tells me to get off the phone as soon as it's fixed as it's costing me money!) managed to get my cable modem to play ball again - great.

But now I can't get the wireless router to play ball at all. If I try to introduce it to setup, it just knocks everything out.
This suggests to me that there are IP address conflicts, but given that the network settings are meant to be for automatic detection, this shouldn't matter.

Any clues? I really want to get this set up and sorted without going completely bald!

In a minor, related point, I've also got a conflict for network names - do you know how I can kill these off so I can start again?

cheers
bear
xxx

Intel ProSet Wireless - 'Problem applying Profile'

Hi
Has anybody come across this problem.

When I try to connect to my router using the Intel ProSet Wireless s/w I get a message displayed 'Problem applying Profile'.
I have to reboot my laptop sometimes several times before I can connect ok.
To try and fix the problem:
The system has had the hard disk reformatted and all s/w re-installed.
I have tried resetting the router a few times but still get the same error msg.

The connection works on the ethernet cable.
And up till this weekend if I left the system connected to the router when I shut the system down then the system would automatically connect however today I found the system had disconnected and I had to manually reconnect and as I has the same msg 'Problem applying Profile' I had to reboot a few times before the connection would work.
The router is a Netgear DG834G, the system is running Windows XP os, the wireless is Intel Pro WLAN 3945 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g 54Mbps) for Core 2 Duo Processors.
Up until last Nov/Dec 07 I used to manually connect and disconnect from the router without a problem. And advised to stay connected to router at all times which I have done so but today found it had disconnected itself.
When I get connected to the router it all appears to be working ok on the internet except for a few more page errors loading or not found.

If anyone has any helpful ideas that can help me resolve my wireless connection issues I would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks

54Mb/s

ok i know that a wireless network works at 54Mb/s (under perfect conditions) but what i dont know is if thats for each computer connection or in total, so if 2 computers connected each would only get 27Mb/s or would each get the full 54Mb/s? which is the right way?:P

why cant two computers talk via a acess point?

ok:
bthomehub connects to the net
belkin is a acess point to bt but it connects wirelessly to bt
my desktop connects to belkin and has file shares and a printer shared also.

my laptop can access the files and printer if its connected to BThomehub but not if its connected to belkin any reason why?

Noobie Question - Cable modem & Wireless Router?

I know this is a really basic questions but I would appreciate some help.
I currently connect to Virgin Media via the cable modem that they supply and then from this to my wireless router via a cabled connection.

I'm about to relocate my modem and router and would like to know if it's possible to get one box to do both jobs.

If so any pointers to which are best?

Thanks

Wireless Networking equipment - advice sort.

Excuse the long post, but I think I've covered nearly everything! ;)
I need to buy some kit soon. I'm looking to network my new PC and Laptop together, with a Broadband connection, when I get them (all)!

I was going to try and get a laptop with 'N' wireless, to overcome any range problems I may have if I kitted myself out with non-N equipment. If a 'N' laptop is not necessary - as they all seemed to be a bit expensive !! that would be great. But I don't know about the other sorts of 'G' equipment, there are 3, I think?

I don't know who to choose for a Broadband provider, yet, (everyone seems to have a horror story!), but I know some give away wireless modem routers, although I'm thinking of ignoring this and maybe getting what you advise anyway! (I was thinking of going with non-cable Virgin, though.)

Does 2.4GHz from the router travel though brick walls and wooden floors or does it bounce off them to find its way to the wireless laptop?

My main PC is at one extreme end of the house, upstairs, whereas the lounge (where the laptop will be used 50% of the time), is at the other end downstairs (50ft max' away?). As well as the wooden floor, there is a solid 9" wall between the main PC and the lounge.

The telephone line comes in at the roof level, so is it true that the faster copper connection would be closest to the BT i/p - this would rule out using the phone point at the main PC (upstairs, extreme end of house). This would also make the the wireless signal travel furthest to the lounge as well.

I don't know where I am going to set up the wireless modem/router yet. I have a choice of BT points, from the middle of the house down and upstairs, and at the main PC.

I was thinking it would be best to have the main PC connected to the 'net by a wire via the modem?

I was also thinking maybe I could have both a wired modem at the main PC upstairs, as well as a wireless modem, either upstairs or downstairs mid-house, but this would mean that I must only have one powered up at a time - isn't that so ?
This may work, but may be a pain in practice. See below - if using WHS.

Going slightly off topic - but related (honest!) - before I decided to get a laptop as well as a desktop, I was wondering how to backup my data on my main PC, which I am going to build.
I thought I'd use RAID and have 2 drives with duplicate info - I haven't any experience of Ghost (I'm not sure exactly how it works!) doesn't it copy your whole HDD to multiple DVD's ??
After that I thought that maybe I'd use external HDD to copy my data instead? But then thought HDD failure is less likely than a virus/similar trashing not only my data, but the OS and programs - which would take the longest to reinstall!
I was thinking of having a copy of all my data, that I have on both machines, and was told Microsoft Synchronise was what I would need to keep email's on both machines and my Doc's and Photo's the same and up-to-date, is this right??

Recently, I heard about Microsoft's Windows Home Server - as I understand it this would take care of my data, on both machines, but would it do the programs and OS's too, if I needed a complete reinstall?
(This is why I am still on topic!) If so, this seems like the best idea, to build another cheap rig to run WHS!,but I'm not sure if it matters if it is wireless or not? - but it would need to be on the network somewhere !!

After all that, current equipment make and supplier, please ?

Look forward to much needed advice !!

Thanks, Speedee1 :)

125 Mbps just marketing speel???

My home network contains two computers, my Athlon tower PC on LAN connection & my PIII laptop on WAN. I have a 125 Mbps PCMCIA card & a 125 Mbps capable wireless router but the actual transmission is 54 Mbps. I have been told this is fine & the standard all wireless networks operate at. But surely the router should default to 125 Mbps if my hardware supports it. If my hardware does not support it, where is the bottle neck? Would it be the LAN network card on my tower?

I can post specs on request. Please could someone explain in simple terms why this is?

Many thanks

Can connect to router but nor internet - Vista 64 HP

I recently built a media-centre PC, using an ASUS P5E-V HDMI motherboard, Intel E6750 cpu, 4Gb Corsair XMS2 800MHz RAM and two WD 500Gb SATA HDDs. I installed Vista 32 Home Premium while I waited for the 64-bit disk to come from Microsoft and got on pretty well. As my wireless part of my modem/router died, I had bought a D-Link DKT-410 kit and the DWA-140 USB adapter worked like a dream - until Vista 64 arrived and I found there's no driver for it. I then bought an EdimaxEW-7728ln PCI adapter as that was supposed to work with Vista 64.

To be fair, it does work but not as it should. It connects to the router but won't connect any further, the system telling me that only local access is possible. I can't access the router or modem using their dotted quad addresses, either. I'm stumped. All the software's been fully updated, btw. Anyone have any ideas?

Keith

Multi-Routers?

I have a BT Homehub and a BT VOyager 2091. The 2091 has an ethernet port, and so does one of my pcs. I was wondering if it was possible to set the 2091 to connect to the HomeHub, giving the computer access through it. Is this possible, or am I better of buying a usb stick?

Ive looked on the config page and there is an option to change the ssid, but not for the security key.

Wireless PCI card

Hi, I got a wireless PCI card without driver software and Windows XP doesn't seem to recognise it either. My pc shows me connected to the network, good signal, i used the correct password no probs, but i can't get on the internet. My internet browser just does not see an internet connection.
On one of the laptops, I tried pinging the DNS server addresses, and it gets a reply, no probs. On my pc i did the same and i get nothing.

Please, has any nice bods and peeps got an idea whats going on....

Buffalo or Billion router?

Hi all!

My wireless Belkin router has become extremely unreliable recently so I'm looking to replace it.

I was originally thinking of replacing it with the Buffalo Airstation wireless modem router but some of the customer feedback on the last couple of pages is quite off putting.http://www.ebuyer.com/product/114307

Billion make a similar product the 7300G and I have heard good things about this particular make in the past. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/112954

Price wise there is nothing in it but I would be interested if anyone has had any experiences with the Billion router and whether or not they would favour it over the Buffalo.

Cheers,

Whiskey.

netgear wireless adapter

Hi people. first post..
i have recently just installed my netgear wireless adapter and i have found that it has changed how windows xp starts up, no longer does it come up with the colourful startup that lets me just click on my username and insert my password, instead it comes up with a blank black screen followed by a windows 95 like screen that i have to manually type my username and password in,

any help appreciated cheers,

ps would fitting a pci wireless card cure the problem

win xp 64 bit drivers for link sys or asus wireless pci adapters

Hi have tried a linksys wmp54g wireless pci card adapter but doesnt find a driver
have got an amd athlonx2 cpu and windows xp 64 bit, any ideas wgere i can get drivers for this? tried WMP54Gv4-x64.inf i downloaded but ran into error 10 code
anyone any ideas?
also tried an asus pci adapter but says not correct drivers ? due to 64bit as has xp drivers on
thanks
mobius

wireless card

help required please i have a broadband connection via a router using cable i also have a belkin wireless card now i also have a nintendo ds which i want to get on the net is it possible to get the wireless card set up to use my broadband connection without having to buy a wireless router .
Best router for Linux?

Whats the best router for Linux?
