| I regularly lose my wireless connection, even with a signal of @90%. The card I am using is Belkin F5D7000uk version3000uk. The second computer in the house works fine and has an older Belkin card. This older card uses Broadcom technoloy whist mine uses RalinK. I have the latest driver from Belkin and have to date had no satisfactory response from their tech-help. I looked at the Ralink (chipset manufacturers) forum and what I can gather it may be better to use the Ralink driver RT2550 - have any forum members tried this or know anything which may help ?. | It could equally be your router that's at fault. Check to see if there's a firmware upgrade for it.

All I can suggest is downloading Netstumbler from www.netstumbler.com
This will show you not only the signal level, but the noise as well.
Keep it logging in the background, then when there is a cut off have a look and see if either the signal has dropped, or the noise increased.

| Thanks for the information about Netstumbler, I'll give it a try. Would it be worth trying another channel ?. I'm default channel 11. I've been looking around the "net" and it appears to be quite common for the connection to drop on this type of Belkin card. Many people have gone to using the Ralink driver/utility with success ( http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm  . I'll do some more investigation and post a reply. I would be interested to know if any Forum members are having the same problem with this type of Belkin card. Thanks again Dave

Could be interference from someone else close by on the same channel.
This would show up as noise.
Netstumbler will show you everything in the neighbourhood.
What channels, signal strengths etc.
Noise is as important as Signal, but most OEMs diagnostics never show it!
Noise cancels out signal, so you need the difference between the two to be as large as possible.
This difference is known as the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio).
It's measured in decibels which is a logarithmic scale.
Every 3db drop effectively halves the signal, so a 6db spike in noise cancels out 3/4 of the signal you were receiving.
With Netstumbler running you can use the other PC to change the channel on the router - your PC will follow - and you can then see which channel is best.

| Thanks for the information about signal/noise - useful thing to know. I had a look at Netstumbler website, please can you tell me, is it Netstumbler 0.4.0 that I need to install ? Is it easy enough to uninstall, just in case there should be any problems ? Thanks Dave

| I installed Netstumbler but for some reason I couldn't connect to the net. Have uninstalled it and have changed from Belkin driver to Ralink. The Ralink utility actually shows signal strength and noise level either as % or in decibels. I will inform this post of further developments with this driver/utility. Dave
