Last year I did the City & Guilds in web design and got interested in web design. My problem is that we didn't really go into cascading style sheets or anything in any depth, we just learned basic html. And now from reading other threads in this forum it seems that I'm even further behind than I realised.
So lets say I'm a complete beginner, stuck at home with some access to the web and able to get hold of books. Where do I start? I'd really like to go further but there aren't any more advanced courses locally. I'm a single parent so I'm always skint.
I learn best when someone explains step by step what to do and why, then gives some examples to work with.
If anyone can suggest a good book for beginners I'd be grateful.
Cheers!

Thanks again. This is helpful; I've spent ages reading different books and trawling different sites and getting nowhere.
I really need an a-z. I'm saving up for html for dummies unless someone says different. I picked up basic html quickly but these cascading style sheets do my head in. Does anyone else find it all unneccessarily complicated for a basic site? Wasn't the whole point that you could easily do it in a basic text editor, even with a very basic standard of education? I don't understand why we can't use basic html for some sites.
I'm in favour of a Plain Browser for certain sites.

It depends how you are writing the site, if your useing tables, div and span tags properly then they are very easy to use (once you get the syntax right). If your still using the font tag and frames then they arn't so useful - plus if you are you should learn the newer methods
CSS can be tough to begin with but once you realise it's potential as a way of laying out pages - rather than just as style / font attributes, then they make alot more sense.
try the w3c (www.w3.org) which are the official auditors of CSS for tips and a full a-z of xhtml and css.
Cheers,
Tom

Been there, done that. I'll fess up; I'm a middle aged technophobe. I haven't found any of this easy, and I've found that the easiest way for me to learn is to sit in a classroom, have someone demonstrate bit by bit, then try it.
I'm baffled by the amount of info on the ww3 site and don't know where to start.
I'm really looking for a guide for idiots, I guess. Something that will take you by the hand and lead you through it.

LOL agreed the www3 site is a tad confusing at first.
Try learning it from a book, this is a good idiots guide: http://tinyurl.com/em2q2
Or search amazon for the excelent 'Dummies' series (html for dummies is the title I think)
Cheers,
Tom
