what does it mean when a graphics card says it has a TV Out? Does this mean you can connect your computer up to a normal TV and use it as a monitor? If so, what type of cable do you use. Also why doesn't everyone not just connect their PC up to a massive TV and not bother buying expensive large monitors?

"TV-Out" usually means that the card supports output to a normal TV in addition to a monitor. The reason most people dont then use huge TVs instead of monitors is that a TVs dot-pitch (the ratio of the amount of picture forming dots per inch) is no-where near as good as on even a low end monitor. In my own experiance then only time I use the TV out is for watching DVDs etc.

Some cards let you use the TV out as a 2nd display giving you a larger screen area which can at times be useful, for instance watching a dvd on the TV and keeping an eye on a download on the monitor.

TV-out can also be used as a rudimentary way to transfer edited video footage from the hard drive to video-tape, if you don't have a DV-in enabled camcorder, or analogue-out capture card.
This is a method I used in the past prior to fitting an AV/DV capture card, - (Pinnacle Studio Deluxe) and used to play Mpeg 2 files perfectly with PowerDVD 4.0 outputting via TV-out on a Nvidia Geforce 2 MX to VCR.
As Pireland points out, other data displayed, - word documents ect, - can be difficult to read on a normal TV, for this you would need one of the "Dual-head" type cards, which will connect two monitors.

TV-out is also mainly used for ease of presentations, It is a 1v signal so u can daisy chain it to multiple displays. It comprises of the yellow colour coded phono plug (aka RCF plug?) the style plug used in audio equipment. It can be plugged into a phono socket on video input somewhere on a midrange TV set, or in a scart adapter.

Its also excellent for watching DVDs, but ull have to set the TV-out socket as a primary, as the DVD harware/software wont allow both multiple monitors to recieve a decoded signal faster enought to view the picture correctly at high resolutions. Plus if u want both displays to use the same image eg exactly the same on each screen, then usually the monitor has to match the refresh rate of the TV signal, which on a Computer monitor gives u a blinding headache after a while.
