vMac emulates the Mac Plus, the third Mac Apple released.
Apart from the amount of RAM (1Mb rather than 128K) and the inclusion of a SCSI port, there wasn't really much difference between the 1986 Mac Plus and the original 1984 model. That emulator will run everything from the very first version of Mac OS to System 7.5.5.
The Apple system I'd love to see emulated is the Lisa; the Mac's more powerful, expensive and much less successful predecessor. Mac OS was initially a severely cut down and crippled version of the Lisa's innovative OS. Since most later user interfaces copied Mac OS rather than the discontinued Lisa, its GUI has some quite unusual features, such as being heavily document-centric, rather than being based around applications. I'd love to compare it side by side with the latest operating systems and have a look at how much (or how little) progress we've really made in the last 23+ years.
There are/were a few Apple Lisa emulation projects around, but unfortunately they don't seem to have gone anywhere in the last few years. The Lisa's custom hardware and copy protected OS make it a relatively difficult system to emulate, and there are few people familiar enough with the Lisa to have much chance of succeeding. At the moment the only way to try out the first GUI for a desktop computer is to buy an actual Lisa, and even I'm not enough of a retro computer geek to spend thousands of pounds just to play with an OS.
