Please look away if cruelty to Amigas upsets you.
My parents dug my old A1200 out of the loft this week, and it's in a bit of a state - filthy but (seemingly) uncorroded. I've just given it a quick try, and although it powers on and I get lights (green, then a yellow above) it beeps insistantly a few times and I haven't as yet got a picture out of it. I need to try it with a different telly, but for starters what do the beeps mean?
I'm worried that the mouse port is damaged, as it was plugged in and bent back on itself for years. I can't see any obvious damage, but I'm concerned to say the least.
In a worse case scenario, is there any market for parts? I know the machine had a RAM upgrade for example if such things are worth anything.
Thanks,
Mark

Odd, where does the beep come from? ...the audio ouputs? ('cos I'm pretty sure there's no beepers inside an A1200) ...I've never known my amigas to beep - they normally just make the power LED flash half-bright.

the beeping comes from the chassis a little more than half way along on the end away from the floppy. It's a really odd beep though, a touch scratchy. Could it be the HD trying to rev?

If it's got a HD in it and judging the location you describe it does sound like the drive is shot. Try taking it out and giving it a gentle tap, or try booting from the Workbench floppy and see if you can access the drive that way.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try what you suggest.
I've had the casing off today, and yes, the HD makes a SQUEAK....crunch...SQUEAK....crunch.. noise on power on. On the up side, I've got it working as far as display goes, and it'll boot from the floppy, although the only working Amiga disk I've got is a copy of Heroquest, and some of the graphics are corrupt (hopefully the disk, not the graphics chip ). It's been worth the bother so far just to hear the amazing in-game music on Heroquest again, but I think I'll persevere in trying to get it all back working properly.
I'll have to get a copy of workbench and try to sort the machine out. Am I right in thinking that I can use an old laptop HD as a replacement?

Thanks for that. I've found a site offering 170mb drives for amigas for a tenner, which I might go for at some point. I stripped the machine right down today, and checked for any physical damage. There wasn't any before, but, due to my surgery skills, there may be now I think the power socket is damaged, as the machine won't boot unless the lead is in at a certain angle. I'll maybe tower the rig, if I can get it running nicely.
I'd love to be able to check whether the graphics are really ok, but only having a ten year old copy of one game to test with, I'll have wait and see.

Hi Ergath
Soz I haven't replied for a while.
The faulty power socket could be a cracked solder joint on the mobo (a common problem with Amigas after a while.) Can be fixed by soldering a bridge over the dodgy joint, the hard bit is identifying which joint it is.
With regards to the graphics corruption, that could be the floppy disk that's a bit duff, after all look how old it is. Try a floppy drive cleaner.
Good luck with that.

The biggest HD you can get on the miggy pre-OS3.5 is 4Gb.
However there's a driver you can download to overcome it on the Aminet somewhere!
