I've just lost most of yesterday and half my hair trying to get my paws around a wireless router.
The Dynamode BR-6004 W-G1 is meant to be reasonably plug and play in the sense that you plug it in, rung a ping command in DOS and it's all up and running.
I nearly had it yesterday - my main machine could see the wireless network (pointless given that this is the machine that the cable modem is plugged into) but the laptop couldn't see a dickybird. As I'd used XP to set up wireless network 'BEAR', I'd saved those settings to my USB stick and plugged that into laptop - laptop said it didn't like it and couldn't use it. Ho hum.
So I went back into the web-based wireless network configurator, turned off some setting (pah! can I remember? my brain is made of stuffing) and lost the complete internet connection. Fantastic.
One 10 minute call to Virgin Broadband's helpful helpline (i don't begrude paying the dosh when someone is really helpful and tells me to get off the phone as soon as it's fixed as it's costing me money!) managed to get my cable modem to play ball again - great.
But now I can't get the wireless router to play ball at all. If I try to introduce it to setup, it just knocks everything out.
This suggests to me that there are IP address conflicts, but given that the network settings are meant to be for automatic detection, this shouldn't matter.
Any clues? I really want to get this set up and sorted without going completely bald!
In a minor, related point, I've also got a conflict for network names - do you know how I can kill these off so I can start again?
cheers
bear

| Right, another three hours later - I've lost the connection, found it, lost it and finally found it. Hurrah! Lots of coarse Anglo-Saxon involved too. All that remains to be done is to somehow get the wireless network working. The laptop with the wireless network card can see the network, but it won't let me access the internet from it. No idea why, any help welcomed! The laptop is running XP SP2 - but it's not upgraded IE7 yet.

Had a partial victory this morning just before heading to work - the laptop allowed me to connect to the Internet by manually setting an IP address for the connection to look for. The downside is that this was an unsecured network.
I then went back to the Internet Explorer based settings for the connection to turned security on (an ASCII shared key). And the connection promptly went down and refused to let me back in.
Why is this so difficult?! Everyone else who has commented about this kit on-line has said how easy it is and it's all pretty much plug n play.
Much grrrrrs!

yay! success!
thanks to the lovely people at dynamode who told me what to do. And the even nicer manager at staples who told me not to buy a different router instead. jars of nutella all round.
in case anyone else gets stuck, here is the advice they told me:
Hard Reset
Take a PIN and hold down the "Reset" button on the back of the router,
HOLD IT until the CPU light goes out, then comes back on (Approx. 10 - 15 seconds), then release.
All the L.E.D’s should go OFF, then come back ON.
When the WAN light is ON and SOLID, then the Router is Ready for use
Once this has been done, please try the following:
(once the Router is configured with a cable, then the Router can be configured for Wireless use)
Installation
To install the router you must follow the Instructions below:
Note: you must install the router using the computer that ran the NTL CD to establish Internet access the first
time.
Connect the Ethernet Cable from the NTL Modem/Digital Box to the WAN port on the Dynamode router.
Connect the Ethernet Cable from the LAN port of the Dynamode router to your PC's Network Card
Please Make sure that your PC is enabled to obtain IP Address Automatically:
Control Panel > Internet Connection > Right Click on Local Area Network > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties > check
obtain IP Address Automatically
Please make sure that ALL Firewall or any other Viruses Protections are Turned OFF or Disabled.
Please check that the Your PC/Laptop received an IP Address from the router:
Click on START > RUN > Type in CMD > OK
in the command prompt window please type IPCONFIG
your IP Address should be 192.168.1.X
Default Gateway should be 192.168.1.1
If you received the result above means that you are connected to the router if not please repeat the steps above.
Once you have the received the IP Address above, minimize the Command prompt window and open your Internet Browser
(firefox, Internet Explorer)
Type in the Address Bar http://192.168.1.1 > Username: guest > Password: guest
Click on WAN Setup > Click On Dynamic IP User > Click on Clone MAC Address > Apply > Save > OK
Please leave the Router to stand for a few minutes for the settings to be applied
Now Turn off / Power down all devices – the Dynamode Router, the NTL Modem and your Computer.
Now reboot the devices in the following order:
1. Switch on the Dynamode Router and leave it to boot up for approx. 2 minutes.
2. Switch on your Computer and leave it to boot up to the Main Desktop screen.
3. Finally, switch on the NTL modem and leave it to boot up for a few minutes.
Once this has been done, open your Web-Browser on the Computer.
Do you have Internet Connectivity ?
Please advise
