This is the first time i've played with wi-fi, so i apologise for my possibly not explaining this very well.

I've just moved into a house share with the following set-up,

Desktop pc (host) with speedtouch usb modem to internet, and also, bt voyager 2091 w/l router usb (taskmanager+network connections says its a network bridge)

2 laptops connect to the internet through the bt 2091 w/l. these have been manually configuered and all works, as long as the desktop is on and connected to the internet.

So, along i come with my desktop with a usb wi-fi dongle, which i have manually config to connect to this network (used the same TCP/IP settings as on the laptops, except for its own IP address, and the same DNS info). My pc shows me connected to the network, good signal, i used the correct password no probs, but i can't get on the internet. My internet browser just does not see an internet connection.
On one of the laptops, I tried pinging the DNS server addresses, and it gets a reply, no probs. On my pc i did the same and i get nothing.

Please, has any nice bods and peeps got an idea whats going on....

cheers si

I don't understand the topology of the network.
The Voyager is a wireless router so I would expect that to handle all the internet connections, but you say there's also a speedtouch connected to a PC.
Also the PC must be turned on for things to work.

Looks like some really complicated Windows Internet Connection Sharing going on.
That's probably where the issue lies.
Sounds like a right old dog's breakfast.

If the ISP is BT I'd get the Voyager to do all the work (dump the speedtouch) and you can set everyones IP settings to automatic.

Hi, sorry my layout not very clear.

Host desktop pc connects to the ISP they have with the speedtouch modem. BT is not the ISP. Someone they know, came round and connected up the Voyager w/l 2091, (they allready had), so they could now use the laptops from their seperate rooms in the house.

I agree it's a bit of a balls up, but some how i'd like to connect up to this network.

OK, so it's Internet Connection Sharing time
In theory what you have done is correct, duplicated all the IP settings except the PC's own address.

Double check that you have the WEP/WPA key correct for the wireless.
If you can, disable WEP/WPA on the 2091 altogether just to see if it is that.

This is how I understand your set-up to be:

If this is correct then you shouldn't need the USB modem at all. The BT Voyager should have a built-in modem which will handle the ADSL connection for you - all you need to do is set it up to do so.

For example:

This way you don't have to keep the PC on in order to connect to the internet.

If this is incorrect try and give us a clearer idea of what is connected to what:

1. PC connected to USB modem by USB cable (and ?).

2. Modem connected to BT Voyager (and?) by what cable?

If this is correct then you can find set-up instructions for the BT Voyager 2091 here:

http://www.plus.net/support/hardware/pc_voyager_2091.pdf

The instructions are for PlusNet but any other ISP should have a similar setup.

Cheers,

Wiley

Thankyou wiley, great diagrams

Your first diagram is the closest to what i have here, except one thing, the 2091 is connected to the desktop pc with a USB cable.

So to me , it looks as if the desktop pc is the host to an internet connection sharing set-up.
The 2091 is used for its wi-fi only.

You don't need the desktop to be host to the connection. You have a perfectly good ADSL gateway in the BT Voyager 2091. To me it would seem a bit inconvenient, not to say wasteful, if you had to keep the PC on any time you wanted to connect to the internet (if you could that is!).

Anyway, I recommend you speak to your fellow house-mates and alert them to this fact - it'd certainly save on the electricity.

What you need to do is get all the settings you need (ISP username and password etc. - as mentioned in the plusnet guide above) and set the "host" PC up in the way it is shown in the 2nd picture above. The 2091 should've come with a yellow RJ45 (ethernet) cable which you can use to connect to the "host" PC, if you don't have one, buy one, they're dead cheap.

Use the host PC to then configure the router (usually by entering "http://192.168.1.1/ into your web browser, the password is on the bottom of the router).

Turn off DHCP and set up the rest of the wireless comps with individual addresses etc.

Good luck and let us know how you got on,

Wiley
