This cannot be original, but here goes.
How about a periodic builders feature (same format, not very long, say two pages with pics) that gives details of the 3 best bets for system builders? A top spec machine; a budget machine, and a middle of the road machine? The staff will probably build them. About once a month these are reviewed in the mag and updated, and the details stored on the website permanently for builders to access. Include costs using internet sales sites.
Pros: Usefully highlights technical changes when they happen; gives builders an easy access point of reference; will no doubt result in debate; gives a good idea of performance against cost.
Cons: Potentially somewhat repetitive (the 43 specials linger forever, but hey, I use one); will probably be one person's opinion and thus disputed/ridiculed...etc.; perhaps there's enough of this already???

Ive always wanted to see a £200-300 pound challenge, who can make the best Box for £300
excluding OS and allowing Ocing. Then set it a few challenges such as super pi 3d mark etc
Lets find out who really does have 'skills'

This has been raised before and the problem, as ever, is this: who would buy all the gear? The magazine doesn't have the resources and I'm sure the writers wouldn't care to stump up themselves for rigs they don't want or need. It's a great idea, but sadly not viable.

TBH I think the best point of reference for such things is right there.
Not a day goes past in System Builders without the same question being asked and answers given and debated.
The other thing is what constitutes "best"?
Personally I have no interest in graphics cards any more, but I do have a use for Quad Core.
Also things move so damn fast.
Just try keeping the motherboard sticky up to date

What about building them and then selling them off " as featured in MM"
They would be celebrity PC's and everyone would pay millions of pounds for them
Phil.

if something goes wrong:
hardware send it back as all components would have a warranty
software ask on the forums
but it would have to be made clear that MM will not support it in the same way a shop would but the forum members would be able to help etc
