I don't know about other folk, but I am having difficulty getting my head around the new hot topic of Virtualisation. Emulation seems to mean creating an interface that will run software designed to run on another machine and operating system.
But is Virtualisation offering the Holy Grail of just one very powerful PC being able to run a choice of operating systems and ALL their software, so that you can, for example, then effectively sit down at a Mac, Windows or Linux machine, merely by session choice ?

I agree, it is one of those topics which isn't clearly defined.
I figure it is very similar to emulation in concept but actually totally different. Rather than emulate hardware, it just makes the program (or operating system) think it is has control of a machine. I believe the term is 'sand box' and was similar to the original method of multi-tasking found on the older Acorns etc.
A proper article which some real info and not just a skim of the history etc would be very welcome.

It does actually emulate hardware. For instance, Virtual PC 2007 makes the guest OS believe it's running on a Pentium III with S3 Trio64 graphics and a Sound Blaster 16 soundcard. It doesn't matter what your real hardware is or what OS you're running as the guest -- that's what you get. In my book, that's emulation.

Definitely would be a very good area to cover. I for one haven't got my head round virtualisation at all.

Jason (01/02/2008) ...Virtual PC 2007 makes the guest OS believe it's running on a Pentium III with S3 Trio64 graphics and a Sound Blaster 16 soundcard.
The sad part is, I've probably got the spares lying around to make the real thing!

It has been covered in MM this year a few times.
Emulation is a good way to think about it, but it's a bit more than that at the top end especially.
Once you have tried it, and I assure you it's easier than dual or triple booting, you'll not want to test (or even run) multiple o/ses in any other way.
But as Jason has said, the emulated hardware is very basic.
Networking still works properly though as each VM has it's own netbios name and IP address.

You get the emulated hardware and that's it. Nothing else. It doesn't matter what sound card you're really running, or whether or not you've got a TV tuner -- the virtual OS won't even know it's there, much less be able to use it.
