My home network contains two computers, my Athlon tower PC on LAN connection & my PIII laptop on WAN. I have a 125 Mbps PCMCIA card & a 125 Mbps capable wireless router but the actual transmission is 54 Mbps. I have been told this is fine & the standard all wireless networks operate at. But surely the router should default to 125 Mbps if my hardware supports it. If my hardware does not support it, where is the bottle neck? Would it be the LAN network card on my tower?

I can post specs on request. Please could someone explain in simple terms why this is?

Many thanks

125Mbps Wi-Fi isn't an official standard, so you'll only get that speed if all the hardware uses the same protocol (usually meaning the hardware needs to be all made by the same manufacturer). The speed will drop down to 54Mbps otherwise.

Ok, the card/router is not made by the same manufacturer but I do happen to have a Zoom wireless card, my router also being Zoom. So will try that.

Thanks

Even with matched brands it still maxes out at 54Mbps. I guess it is not to be & have gone back to my Buffalo card as has smaller footprint & even manages to look funkier.

But do both the Zoom router and Zoom card both specifically support 125Mbps (and the same *type* of 125Mbps)?

The router supports up to 125 speed & the card supports up to 140 speed tho it says it supports 125 as well as 140? I just thought Zooms stuff would automatically be compatible???

"The actual speed you get depends on the type of data being sent and the actual data rate of your 802.11g connection."

Also:

"Higher effective speeds...can be achieved by using special compression algorithms and techniques like packet aggregation & frame bursting."

The Buffalo G card says, "When operating in high speed mode, this Wi-Fi device achieves an actual throughput of up to 34.1 Mbps, which is the equivalent throughput of a system following 802.11g protocol and operating at a signalling rate of 125 Mbps. Actual data rate...and performance may vary depending on your computer system, the enviroment & other factors." Ahh yeh, ur right, then it says, "Maximum speed...is achievable when used with the same enhanced mode technology."

Zoom technical support say 54 Mbps is fine & it's down to my computer.

Sounds like Zoom are feeding you a line, though they're correct that 54Mbps is adequate (unless you're doing a lot of filesharing with other users on your network).
