ok i know that a wireless network works at 54Mb/s (under perfect conditions) but what i dont know is if thats for each computer connection or in total, so if 2 computers connected each would only get 27Mb/s or would each get the full 54Mb/s? which is the right way?

54 Mbps for 1 connection, 27 for 2, etc.
Plus, distance affects it, the further away, the lower the speed, so at 100M, it might only be 2Mbps, unless you use repeaters, and clients that automatically connect to the nearest Wifi node.

For example, we use 2 54g APs, set up as zone repeaters, and the clients automatically connect to the strongest signal.

thanks guys, so next Q how many computers can i connect to an access point before it starts lagging? they wont be more then 50M away (max) so assume its the full speed and the data they will be accessing via it will be the Internet and shared files

and again thank you

Alex

When (and if! ) you get your degree, is the entire Forum going to have to turn up en masse to the award ceremony to collect it on your behalf?

i do understand that i have been asking a few questions relating to uni work lately, however i had researched the topics beforehand and was unable to find out the information i needed that is why i posted asking for help (its my understanding that that's what these forums are for), the topics i can remember are:

cost benefit analysis
-I had never done one before and Google did not bring up anything of use at all and after 3 days of looking i posted asking for help.
- information collected accounts for about 1/50 pages (written up based on the information - in other words i used the information to develop my ideas not just copied it)
wireless network speed
- again googled for several days nothing at all relating to what i needed in anyway whatsoever.
- 5/5,400 words in report
and windows server licences
- this issue is confusing and MS are naff at explaining on their site, and figured their might be some sort of system admin on here that may be able to help me with the information i needed
- 0 input

regarding the last bit of information requested in this thread, i have never ever set up a network with more then 7 computers in so have no experience in the area and no way of knowing.

imo posting on this forum and getting advise/ information is no different then going to a local business and interviewing them, only difference i trust the MM forum members to give good advise or inform me of bad advise given by others.

last point i am going to make is, yes there has been a few requests for information however these are minute compared to the amount of work/time/effort i have put into this single bit of work somewhere on the scale of 0.001% of the total information required to put this report together (there is still another 3 to do in the next 5 weeks as well as build a program and document) so its not as if i am asking the MM forum members to do my work for me because in actual fact its only information gathering.

please dont take it personally but i am getting fed up with people suggesting its not hard work and that i dont need to put any effort in, in-fact its bloody hard work and i have to put allot of effort in just to make sure i can continue onto next year let alone getting a decent grade.
/rant
mood = tired, overworked and had a bad day so sorry if i have taken it the wrong way

Hang in there chum, the lager swilling student stereotype is always going to be there, no matter how much you bitch about it.

My kid brother has just got a 1st and I know how much effort it took, he worked his f-ing bo-ocks off for it. If my limited knowledge can help you, PM me and I will give you my MSN and email address. (I used to work for a computer company, perhaps that will help, but don't hold your breath.) These guys on here should be helping you out, the more experts, the cheaper the products will be ultimately!
