Many older machines suck more juice than newer models...The C2D is very efficient...does not require 2volts to it for a start!

Intel e7200 @ 4.0GHz (4.32GHz SuperPi(e)) Lapped
Asus P5E-VM (Vdroop pencil modded)
4Gb Patriot Pc6400 4-4-4-12
250Gb Samsung Spinpoint
Sapphire ATI 3870/Akasa Vortexx Neo
Enermax 600 Watt PSU
Ubuntu/Win XP
All in a Thermaltake Handbag...
Or flying @ 4.21GHz in the Stacker.

Try some MM Super Pi(e) here!

Perhaps Windows 98's problem is that it's sufficiently old as to be obsolete but not so old as to cause nostalgia and affection in certain quarters, unlike the Amiga or Commodore 64. I couldn't imagine using Windows 98 now - it was extremely unreliable.

I accept that that 'new motherboards' will not recognnise Win 98, but old 'new stock', and 2nd user items are available (recyling).

Windows is Windows is Windows !!!!!. No, its DOS ,Win 3.1 Win 95, Win98, Win98SE, ME, XP, Vista.
Not all of us are ' tweakers or power users, gamers', and there many of us out here that are quite happy to use Win 98, it works for us, and it works our kit.

The ultimate upgrade, for Win 98SE, plus what programes still support the O/S, that is what I would like to see in a article in Micro Mart, plus a accasional article re-what programs are still available.

I'm not so sure that we can generalise quite that easily, Conrad.

It wasn't until after WinXP came out with SP2 that I could get it to run reliably on any of my machines. Many of my friends experienced similar problems with hardware that was clearly stated as being on the supported list that simply wasn't supported. I stuck with Win98SE because it was working totally flawlessly for me personally, and there's still plenty of third-party software that I used to use that hasn't migrated either successfully or, in some cases, at all to WinXP. I had to carry on dual-booting Win98SE with WinXP for a further year while I waited for most of my favourite applications to migrate across.

Almost every OS that M$ have released has worked reliably for the vast majority of users most of the time after an initial bedding-in period.

Cheers, Slipstreem.

System specs: "Phoenix" - Intel C2D E4500 overclocked to 3GHz with ACF7Pro HSF on Volt-modded ASRock 775Dual-VSTA mobo (modded BIOS rev 3.10A and VNB=1.65, Vagp=1.8), 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 RAM (3.0,3,3,8,1T @546MHz), Sapphire ATI HD3870 512MB GDDR4 PCIe graphics card overclocked to 850MHz GPU & 2.4GHz RAM. Powered by Hiper Type-M 580W PSU. Guess who likes overclocking on a budget.

Through the history of the PC there have been good, poor and bad operating systems. MS-DOS 4 was bad, MS-DOS 5 was poor and MS-DOS 6.22 was good enough to support Windows 3.11 and the first active cut and paste Office 4 suite. Win98 was bad but Win98se was good enough to support utilities like Boot Magic that never made it into WinXP(SP1) which was bad, whilst further patched WinXP(SP2) seems to be good enough for most forum members. Whether a second version of Vista is good enough remains to be seen, whilst the initial release seems to have found a useful business niche.
When it comes to Linux there are so many different variants and versions that it can get confusing. Wars between command-line enthusiasts and graphical KDE, Gnome or XFCE don't help. I stopped using Win98se with the April 2007 release of Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) with its GRUB menu for multi-OS boot and reliable cut and paste etc, but Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) better supports file system exchanges.
With pre-declared Long Term Support, Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) could become a good bet before the next Windows gets off the ground ?
A magazine trial page on Win98se (not 98) might find support, but long may the mag cater for changing popular tastes !

I could be wrong, of course, but I suspect a dedicated page to the likes of Windows 98 would produce far more letters of complaint than letters of support. I don't honestly believe there are that many users out there, not users who read computer magazines. And I still reckon all the relevant support queries could be covered in a single article -- which I believe has already been done. Maybe it's time for it to be done again. But a weekly page? Come on -- surely not.

I have fond memories of Win98se never really caused me any problems but imagine a person suggesting a review in a mobile phone magazine for a Nokia 5.1 it just wouldnt have the interest to justify being in the mag.

I agree with Jason that it might be worth revisiting it in a small article or something but iwt would never work as a regular spot in the mag, it would be a waste of time. (for the majority, please dont take offense W98 fans)

a mate of mine still uses Win98 in dual boot as he cannot get his scanner working in Xp, I revisited it a while ago be installing it in a Virtual Pc it was ok but I could never go back!
