When Gmail started dishing out the free storage, there were tools you could download to make full use of the space, but Google put a stop to this (I believe) and restricted the space to mail only.
GMX - as found in the mag - give 5 Gig Mail box and offer 1 Gig of normal storage, that you can either keep to yourself, or have folders that you can share easily with friends and family, simply by making a folder and sending them a link to the folder (via GMX) that they can access whenever -or until you put a stop to it, your choice.
GMX does run a the slow side though.

Google Mail is/was also limited to files no larger than 10MB (I think), pretty much ruling it out except for trivial things.

GMX has a limit of 50 Meg attachments on mails. Slightly more usefull. TBH I rarely use it, but it has come in handy.
I have a My Opera account which allows only 300 Meg (it's supposed to be for pics - but you can bend it), it's fine for what I need. I bet there are people out there with huggins of stuff stashed online though!
