I'm not sure formatting the card in the camera would work for two reasons.
The camera does not recognise the card. It may format it anyway but it doesn't acknowledge the card is in the slot.
I think that formatting flash cards involves setting every bit to zero. In fact I think that one of the limitations of flash - you can set any bit to a binary one but you can only set blocks of data to be binary zero (or vice-versa).
