Tried to use my printer "wirelessly" using the method as described in the article in issue 998, but without success. My desktop is running XP Home, the laptop Vista Home Premium - would this make any difference ? This isn't a dire emergency, but having set up a wireles network, would like to be able to print from the "lappy". Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Soapy,
I have two computers on my home network, one has XP Pro, the other XP Home, have no experience of Vista so can't advise on that. My problem was caused by the firewalls on both computers blocking access to one-another.
I'm using Zone Alarm firewall. Needed to add the ip address and the subnet of each computer to the trusted zone in Zone Alarm.
eg;
Trusted zone on computer A, gets the ip address and subnet (255.255.255.0) of computer B added.
Trusted zone on computer B, gets the ip address and subnet (255.255.255.0) of computer A added.
Now they can both see each other and can share the printer.
Also, make sure they are both in the same workgroup.

What make and model of printer?
Some printers will not work with print servers, or even sometimes as shared printers.
Mainly cheaper GDI or "host based" models - I was surprised that this was not mentioned in the article.

Thanks for the info everybody.
The printer in question is : Canon Pixma MP160.
I know that it isn't exactly the "Bees Knees" when it comes to "all in ones", but is more than sufficient for my needs. I also have an HP photo printer in my loft - proved extremely costly on print cartridges.

As Wylie says, it probably isn't suitable for networking.
I too was surprsied it wasn't mentioned (just caught up with the article).
Generally speaking, most "home" inkjets will fall into this category.

It looks like it will work over wifi, but you need to use their recommended router

Hi All
Just to let you know - success !!! Don't know what I was doing wrong, but I can now access my printer from the "lappy". Thanks for all your advice - perhaps I can throw a few tips your way one day. (We all live in hope !!)
