My D Link router has finally sprung its mortal coil,

So I'm looking for a new router, don't mind wireless,as this will be disabled.

But it must offer Gigabit Ethernet through the ports and have between 4 to 8 ports.

So who makes the best routers

I think you may find a lot of support on here for Buffalo routers.

I have to say I followed Mr. Rice's advice and bought the Buffalo Airstation WBMR-G54 wireless modem router.

It's been a lot more reliable than the Belkin I had originally, which seemed to suffer a lot from over heating.

Cheers,

Whiskey.

Another vote for Buffalo - although another minor annoyance, similar to the above:

I reset the defaults IP address from 192.168.11.1 to 192.168.0.1 (it was a replacement for an existing network with fixed IP addresses). All worked great for a couple of days then stopped - the IP had defaulted back to 192.168.11.1. hapened a few times so just reconfigured the other devices for 192.168.11.xx addresses - fine since.

Very, very stable, especially with other Buffalo kit.

I had already considered the Netgear WPN824, but it's only offers 100 Ethernet on the ports.
Would prefer a router that offers Gigabit Ethernet through the ports, as it will future proof me a bit.

Gigabit wireless routers are still expensive, and I need more than 4 ports anyway.
So I have a £38 Netgear GS608 8 Port Gigabit Platinum switch as the backbone of my network with a £36 Buffalo Airstation WBMR-G54-1.

The only traffic that goes through the Buffalo is internet, DHCP, DNS and anything wireless for which 100mbps is more than enough.
All the big file transfers are through the Gigabit switch which has a 10 Gbps backplane.

If 8 ports is overkill, there's the Netgear GS605 5 Port Gigabit Platinum switch for £25.
