Having just done my weekly shop and got my MM 'fix', Mark's article is a great read, together with Ian Osborne's nostalgia trip. Looking forward to reading the other articles at this time of great change for the PC.

Class. Puts working in those sectors much more in perspective, along with the career profiles piece.
Remember Pacmania on the CPC, brilliant game.

Also - 'not enough chairs'? Laughable.

Enjoyed the history articles as well, esp of linux.

Happy grand!

That was a truly creepy article - to me anyway.

I realised that I was working in Peterborough, in Insurance, at the same time as Mark, and UT and Countrywide / Misys rang very loud retrospective alarm bells.

If anything, he was remarkably charitable about United Technologies. UT had probably the worst man-management in existence, lousy pay, ludricous shift hours and unattainable production targets.
In consequence, at shop floor level, only the otherwise unemployable, desperate and students on vacation who had missed the pub jobs ever worked there (my #2 son had a temporary holiday job there one summer.) The turnover rate was tremendous - few lasted more than a month before being sacked or walking out.
God only knows how Mark stuck it out so long.
( We were asked to quote one year for their Insurance covers and one of my colleagues carried out the risk assessment survey. He refused to write a report, just sent a memo to the Underwriters that said "No Quote")

Countrywide always struck those of us looking from the sidelines as an organisation that didn't really have a clue what its role was supposed to be - it went through more changes in direction than a fairground bumper car.
(At one time I seem to remember Geoff Capes worked for them in some sort of PR role?)
The senior management talked the talk, but never seemed to walk the walk, and even when Mysis took them over it never seemed to significantly improve. Eventually as a company we decided to have no further dealings with them.

Happy days

I have to agree with Mark's assessment of Windows For Workgroups being the number one (influential program).
Not only did it introduce the foundation for 'active' cut and paste quickly exploited by the Office 4 series, it could all be modified to present a simpler interface if so desired, later invoking the more complex interface, once folk had learned the basics. A few firms exploited this, easing the introduction of Windows and Office to their teams. Sadly, around the time of Office97 and Windows 95, Microsoft lost that user-friendly emphasis for their software, probably when a user survey revealed that 90% of the 'new features' desired of Office 97 were already in Office 95 !

Alas I'm running a bit behind between work, studying and decorating, I'm on issue 992 I think. Of course if this edition is guaranteed to be better than 993-999 then I could read them out of order I suppose. Issue 1000 appears a bit thicker and the cover a bit glossier or am I imagining it?
