I have no idea whats going on here but its very very annoying. I'm trying to figure out whats going on with some mystical problem between my router and my new build.

The problem is if I connect my new build to the router with a cable it doesn't work. I get limited connectivity in windows xp, and in ubuntu it says its connected but it isn't, I cant even log in to the router on either OS. I can connect wirelessly to the router and access the internet on both OS's though. I don't know whats going on since it was working yesterday.

I've tried troubleshooting everything I can think of but everything is working fine. Heres what I've tried:

My other computer with vista and ubuntu on it connects fine to the internet through the router, and I can log in to the router. So I know the router is working fine.

I've connect the new build directly to the internet and that works fine. So its not the computer.

I've connected the router to the new build using the same cable I use for the old computer and still the same problem, so its not the cable. I even tried using all of the LAN ports to see if its one of them thats duff but nothing still the same.

I've not changed any settings on the router other than to secure the wireless network which is working fine.

I recently updated the driver for the NIC in XP but if its this it shouldn't effect Ubuntu, but I rolled it back anyway still no joy. Its also the same NIC I have in my other computer thats working with no problems.

I'm at my wits end what the hell is going on? None of the hardware is malfunctioning and neither is any of the software. Im using a D-link router DIR-615 (ver 2.00 E) and NIC is a RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller from realtek. Any help will be very much appreciated. Cheers.

Can you ping the router from the comand prompt? If you type ipconfig /all is all the info pointing in the right place?

Ok bit premature about the realtek NIC working on my old rig thats not working either. According to "ping" in both ubuntu and XP the host (198.162.0.1) doesn't exist. And the both the Cards don't have a Default Gateway. In my old rig I have two NICs because the onboard realtek doesn't work until you reboot and the wireless card in the new biuld is Linksys.

I don't know if the routers shagged but I'm tending to think its the NICs.

Well next time I buy a motherboard and it say realtek in the specs I know to stir clear because realtek are cowboys, thats two mobos and two problems. Now thats my home network screwed because I don't have room in the new build for something that should work on the motherboard already. As for the router I'm not the only one having problems with d-link and realtek so I guess I'm gonna have to send the router back and buy a different brand.
