Me again folks, sorry for another post so soon, but no sooner had I passed on the helpful information on the Mac OS, number two daughter calls from University. She is doing TV production - went down with one of my custom built rigs (XP pro, C2D processor, 2gb RAM, 250gb HDD, Asus Mobo, Nvidia gfx card etc) However feedback from staff and student is that a Windows machine does not cut the mustard when it comes to video editing and movie handling in general. She is not very techie so could not explain to me where Mac scores, so I thought I would ask those nice people at mm
A quickie Google suggested a four figure sum for a Mac which seems a bit pricey (although the OS display looks fantastic) , but for the same money I could buy a fairly impressive laptop or build a real monster desktop. Now I want to stress this is not about which OS is best, I just want to try and understand why the Mac seems to be topping the poll for video handling, is it an application which is Mac specific, or something about the CPU or what?
Any advice welcomed, I am guessing it will be a laptop at the end of the day btw....
Cheers

| It's the same hardware, (less on the portable Mac's), so they're talking out of their bottoms.

Total guess, but maybe Bill Gates and company demand a royalty if anyone ever looks at their operating system.

My guess is that the mac has been suggested so she can use Final Cut Pro.

Again a total guess but I can't see Steve being any different.

Final Cut will indeed be a part of the reason your daughter needs a Mac. Apple have a fantastic package with Final Cut. It is cheaper than the next nearest competitor (Avid) and as a result most college's & universities are teaching kids using Final Cut. So that is why they are suggesting she get a Mac.
One reason why Mac's are considered "special" is because every machine is fantastic value for money and Apple make sure that you get the most from each machine, whether that is a Mac mini or a Mac Pro. They don't do cheap, but at the same time whatever machine you get will come with software to take advantage of whatever hardware you have. Take the Mac mini for example (the cheapest Mac), it comes with iLife (video editing, music production, photo editing & dvd burning software). The Mac mini isn't going to be doing full HD resolution video production but the hardware & software combo for the price is amazing. I don't know how many friends of mine have tried editing video's on their PC's only to encounter problems because some part of the system is causing a bottleneck. Apple take care of all that so you don't have to.
I would suggest, as always, go for the best you can afford. If it's a laptop the MacBook will be fine but get as much RAM as possible (don't get the RAM from Apple unless you have to) and get as big a hard drive as you can.
Finally (I will shut up now honest!) I would add that a lot of people think good design is just about something looking pretty. That's wrong, good design will increase your productivity and using hardware and software that is well designed is important in a fast moving video production environment. Think about it, your PC is your tool. A carpenter uses a chisel whose design hasn't changed in 100 years because it is perfectly designed. It's the same with computers, if your livelyhood depends on the tools of your trade you'd better make sure they are well designed! Thats why I think Mac's are special :p

So they're special because Mac users love them...not for actual technical reasons???
They appear in movies because Apple makes sure that they do...no other.
