Hey steve B, you could be right regarding BT....as they installed and set it up, also had another look at the settings, and what was loading at startup, and BT yahoo has several help files which load at bootup, and seem to run in background. Firefox is quick and fine at bootup, but slows after 30mins or so IE slows as well after 1hr so something is dragging/using the memory up, gradual build up....think it is the extra help files.....I think the old system is approaching retirement....from active service.....

Try using msconfig and disabling as many useless startup items as you can.

Right, have tried that and stopped a live help file starting up, but have also done a new install on a spare wiped HD, which cured one problem (windows rebooting, rather than closing down) but the slow problem still exists, plus I've managed to lose 150 listed favourites in the changeover...ARGGGGHHH! One pace forward, two back, don't think switching ISP providers was the answer. If only Tiscali had responded with a bit more enthusiasm and knowledge probably wouldn't have changed ......and this is still slow and twitchy....GGGRRRRRR!......

Just to clarify, are you connecting with a router or a USB modem?
Try using different cables if possible and change the filters.
If it's USB, try unplugging all other USB devices and using a different port. If it's a router, try using a different socket on the router. In either case, update all drivers (USB, LAN etc.) and check for any OS updates. If you've got another computer you can try on the same connection, how is that performing? If it's fine, try swapping the cables between them and see if that helps.

Hey Tippon, it's a router provided by BT, and have checked everything I can think of regarding hardware, I'm sure it's a software problem. Seems to be OK for speed etc at bootup, then after 10/15 mins or so starts gradually slowing to a virtual crawl....eg mouseclick & again & again, eventually something happens, move mouse side to side across screen....pointer follows at about 3 second lag, gets almost impossible to use. Thought a clean install of WinSE would have cured it, though have still got the original HD install so could switch back.....
A speed test using BT's own software shows up as 0.382megabits/sec....so hardly mindblowing... .....Possibly what's causing it?

Is it just when using web browsers that it grinds to a halt or with any app you use?
