| I have 2 PC`s, primary PC runs PCLOS2007, secondary runs WinXP Home and 2 Printers which all were connected via a 4 Port ADSL Modem Router and both PC`s could print out on either printer .I found myself needing additional network ports so decided to fit a network switch which I have done. So 2 PC`s and 2 Printers now connect to a Netgear 8 Port switch (Ports 1 to 4) which in turn is connected to my Router (Port 8 from switch to Port 1 on router). Internet access on 2 PC`s o.k but problem now is that ! cannot send jobs to the printers. Tried deleting and adding printers but they have become "invisible" on the network. If I check the DHCP list in my router I can see the PC`s and Printers listed and their addresses (192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4 respectively for the printers). So do I have to connect the printers direct to the router to share them between the 2 PC`s or is there some way of doing it leaving them connected to the switch.

Adding a switch shouldn't make any difference at all.
All I can say is experiment.

Deleted printers and then tried to add on both the Linux and WinXP PC`s to no avail. In Linux a network scan for attached printers does not detect any printers attached and I cannot ping either address (192.168.1.2 or .4) of the printers, similar in WinXP. I have attached one of the printers directly back to the router and the WinXP printer immediately started to print out the various test pages I had sent but which had been stalled in the print queue and after deleting and adding the printer on the Linux PC it too is able to print out. Attaching back via the switch results in no printing again ????
What I have noticed is that if I shut down all the Printers, PC`s, Switch and Modem Router and then restart everything the router has allocated different IP addresses to the various items , I assume this is dependant on the order in which the various clients contact the router. Do I need to allocate addresses to the printers so that every time they access the router via the switch they are given the same IP address and if so how do I do this ??

Have a look at the configuration of the DHCP pool on the router and choose fixed IP addresses for the printers outside of that range.
i.e. if the pool is 192.18.1.2 to 192.168.1.100, use .150 and .151
The subnet mask will be 255.255.25.0 and there's no need for a default gateway.

Thanks ricedg for advice. For info I am using a 3Com Office Connect Gateway 3CRWE754G72-A..
DHCP Server Parameters IP Start Pool Address is 192.168.1.2 and IP End Pool Address is 192.168.1.254. Can I just change the latter to say 192.168.1.100 as you suggest ??? Then there is a menu option which allows the addition of Static Route Entries and requires an IP address, Subnet Mask and default gateway - is this where I add the printers ?

Change the DHCP Pool to end at 192.168.1.100
Leave the Static Routes alone - they are for other purposes.

ricedg Apologies for delay in replying but problems yesterday with accessing internet. Router powered up but could not access it via wired PC`s or wirelessly (from my laptop), this is the second time in the last week i have had this problem, so I am wondering if the router is on the way out and this is why I am having problems with printing. It did start to work intermittently late last night but too late to do anything. Switched on this morning and router working straight away ???
I do have access to a new router and I am inclined to try that to see if this fixes the printing problem before persevering with the 3Com changing IP addresses etc. Will post later today with results.

| Tried different router but same problem evident - but If I connect direct to the router printing is possible. Only thing left to try is a different switch !

Problem solved and so simple. The problem lay with some RJ45 cables that I made off myself to connect the switch and printer together, (I needed longers cable to accommodate the route to the switch from the printers), I wired two of the ends up incorrectly !!!!!!! DOHHHHHHHH.
Once I realised this was the case and corrected it everything worked as before. Motto is look for the obvious. Thanks ricedg, your original comment that fitting the switch should not affect anything was absolutely correct.
