Okay I pinched the thread title off the front of MM.
What's the rush?
Could it be that the Asus EeePC has frightened the life out of Microsoft, after all they'll be millions of Linux desktops running on netbooks by next year..
How good is Microsoft at rushing out an operating system any way?

I'll believe it when I see it, frankly. Unless it's a project they've been working on for some time -- a kind of skunk-works thing.

I have to disagree with Mark Pickavances article on a few points. His points are based on recent track record. The reason Vista was severely delayed is due to the problems with XP.
Obviously there are specific issues that came with Vista aswell, but without XP stalling them, it may have delayed them a year.
With the whole delay of Vista and the not-to-interested attitude of people and businesses Microsoft will be doing their utmost to get their track record back and so a 2009/2010 release is believable imho, especially with the idea of simply making a light version of Vista. Less work than creating a Vienna from new.
Now that Microsoft have to submit versions of it's OS to the US Government for checking we can see they are working on it. Already M2 is out (Second Milestone). With Vistas more secure nature they won't need to pull programmers away from Vienna to fix Vista.
Also, the idea that it took "15 months" to get SP1 out is a moot point. Vista didn't really need a service pack, but it was because of peoples attitude that it had to be released.
