The part of Apple giving mp3 a bad name.
I've never heard anyone suggest before that mp3 is in some way a poor codec??
As for AAC I haven't done any testing myself, except to my own ears and they aren't good enough to distinguish between that and mp3. But from what I have read about the subject it seems to be a really good, efficient, codec.
Mpeg4 as a whole is preferable to me, partly because it works well in Quicktime, is easy to work with and I have been using it since day one pretty much.

Pixel Kid (02/05/2008) The part of Apple giving mp3 a bad name.

MP3 is a mighty fine codec when not being artificially constrained by the incompetence of idiot hardware designers. You won't hear many people saying otherwise. It's the limitations of poorly implemented hardware that limit a person to having to use CBR on the encoding side of MP3 and lead to huge files thus making it impractical for most people. iPods were incapable of playing back VBR MP3 encodings until very recently so limited people to having to use CBR at 320Kbps to make it work properly. VBR allows the same level of quality as far as the human ear is concerned with much smaller filesizes. How can it be right that iPod owners were denied this advantage for so long down to Apple's incompetence?
As for AAC I haven't done any testing myself, except to my own ears and they aren't good enough to distinguish between that and mp3. But from what I have read about the subject it seems to be a really good, efficient, codec.
It is, but MP3 can perform better in VBR mode than iTunes AAC whilst returning very similar filesizes along with much better compatibility with other hardware. I suggest that you download Foobar2000 and check this out for yourself with the LAME MP3 encoder.
Mpeg4 as a whole is preferable to me, partly because it works well in Quicktime, is easy to work with and I have been using it since day one pretty much.
MPEG-4 is a video compression standard. It's totally impossible to encode audio with it.
Cheers, Slipstreem.
System specs: "Phoenix" - Intel C2D E4500 overclocked to 3GHz with ACF7Pro HSF on Volt-modded ASRock 775Dual-VSTA mobo (modded BIOS rev 3.10A and VNB=1.65, Vagp=1.8), 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 RAM (3.0,3,3,8,1T @546MHz), Sapphire ATI HD3870 512MB GDDR4 PCIe graphics card overclocked to 850MHz GPU & 2.4GHz RAM. Powered by Hiper Type-M 580W PSU. Guess who likes overclocking on a budget.

Understood, but the point I am trying to get at is a lot of people just don't care. To Joe Average they want a small, attractive box that they can put all their music on. How it all works doesn't matter to them and as you have said those who do worry about such things as mp3 vs AAC vs LAME etc etc wouldn't buy an iPod anyway so it's no problem to them.
As for the Mpeg4, AAC is derived from the audio part of the Mpeg4 video codec standard. And as such I like to keep it in the family as it were Thats all I was saying
