In what way did MediaCoder provide no joy?
1/ Did it not recognise the original video as a valid format?
2/ Did it fail partway through the encoding process?
3/ Did the resultant video play back fine on a PC but not on a standalone DVD player when burned to DVD?
4/ Did the resultant video just look awful?
5/ Have you run GSpot (http://tinyurl.com/23k9v7) to determine what the original video actually is yet in terms of pixel dimensions, bitrate and framerate?
Give us something to work with, Mitch!
Cheers, Slipstreem.

| Sorry for the slow response (and rather sketchy details). I have tried a couple of XVID files now and always get the same result. They **EDIT** sometimes play OK (the DVD that is) on my Laptop via WMP11 or VLC, but as soon as I try to play it in my DVD player (JVC XV S42) the picture breaks up (you just get the flicker of a picture and the Menu won't even load properly either), the sound also wobbles and you get the screech's etc. Here is the GSpot Screenshot of the file (It's an AVI): http://www.sendspace.com/file/905pdx I am using Nero 7.10.1.0 Ultra Edition if that helps? I am also using x64 Vista, although I don't see how that matters as the DVD's play OK on my XP SP3 Lappy? It's just my DVD player that struggles. On the last burn, I used Nero express and drop the speed down to x4 too, but still no difference. My burner is brand new and in my sig. (But my old burner didn't work either)

Slipstreem (22/05/2008)
In what way did MediaCoder provide no joy? 1/ Did it not recognise the original video as a valid format? Yes it found it OK and converted it to MPEG2 although the file did end up smaller?
2/ Did it fail partway through the encoding process? No, it encoded fine.
3/ Did the resultant video play back fine on a PC but not on a standalone DVD player when burned to DVD? No, won't work on my PC and no joy with my DVD Player. ***Edited***
4/ Did the resultant video just look awful? It was stuttery, screeched a lot, with just the occasional second of good video, then pixelation, then a second of good video, then clicking (noise through speakers) and breaking up of picture again. The menu that Nero creates wouldn't work properly either. (stutters and judders and the sound was off and on etc.)
5/ Have you run GSpot (http://tinyurl.com/23k9v7) to determine what the original video actually is yet in terms of pixel dimensions, bitrate and framerate? On the previous post.

Cheers, Slipstreem. Is that enough Slippy? Thanks for helping, this is a bit frustrating. Also, if it helps, VCD's work fairly well, but still have the odd pixelation in stages, then it clears up. Also, I tried to use DVD+RW and it won't even see them, although it does see the Verbatim DVD-R that I using now. (I just guessed it didn't like RW's) The player although old, wasn't exactly cheap. It is a JVC XV S42.

| Hi Chaps, Been doing some more experimentation and I have downloaded a .Cue and .Bin version of this same video. It plays better burnt to a DVD and all I am getting is a stutter every 3 seconds (like a slight pause and then go again). The sound track seems perfectly fine too. But when I stick this in my Lappy, WMP11 locks up and VLC won't play it either (VLC shows the Nero made menu, but it won't play the video)??? The other one I burnt (XVID) using Nero is read by the DVD Player, but won't really play at all, and this one also locks up WMP11 and won't play in VLC. Christ my head hurts. The only one that seems to have worked on my PC was the one encoded by MediaCoder. But that one won't work on my DVD Player. I have got to get to grips with all this, as I have just bought a HDD Video Camera, and my wife is going to want some DVD's of the 'bin lid' soon!

@ mitchlambertuk - You know it sounds as if you are now encountering some old problems, DVD creation software variations and media/burner problems.
It also sounds as if there is still a residual source file mismatch in the conversion from DivX to MPEG-2, meaning that there will always be some video breakup with subsequent re-codings, but note that over many years of trying different DVD editing/creation software, a friend and I have also found subtle differences in the created menu files and VOB file structures, that some players then jibe at.
There's also the match of blank media to burner, where slower burning can improve the optical contrast, as you have already noted, whilst RW discs generally achieve lower contrast. Verbatim DVDRs match most burners, but TDK or Infiniti can be worth a try. Nero's free Infotool, as per http://tinyurl.com/3d4opx can not only tell you a PC DVD drive Firmware version, but can display the blank media manufacturing code for professional problem diagnosis when matching media to burner. There can be a similar problem with Player firmware.
(Note that firmware code controls the precise read or write laser operation for the detected media codes. Finding better firmware and applying it can be far riskier than BIOS upgrades, with separate DVD Player code often being fixed in ROM and not upgradeable, so good luck)
