Hi All.
This is just a thought that came to me this week. My knowledge in this aspect is zero, so please bear with me.
My thoughts are that one could feed a laptop with the output from a digi/video camera ( with x10/20 optical zoom). the camera would be fixed to the grab rail in our 4x4. I have made a fitting for her wheelchair to take an adapted pan/tilt tripod center section to hold a digi camera.
Any thoughts any one.

| Some digicams do support this function, I know that a number of Fuji models do. If yours doesn't then you might be able to do something with a video capture card in the laptop but I should imagine it's going to have to handle an awful lot of data to get a live picture. I'm no expert though, just basing this on the difference in data flow from a webcam compared to the quality that is output from a decent digicam. I may be talking out of my b*m, again! Mike

Hi.
Sorry that I did not explain my thoughts correctly. As my partner is a a Tetra, (impaired use of four limbs through a broken neck at vertabre c3/4) she can barely hold up a pair of bino', let alone focus them. I had thought that it would be simple to live feed a laptop with the data, as per a webcam, but using a digi/video camera for better quality image, hence useing a x10/20 optical zoom. As I have said my knowledge is zero of these things, so I am hoping for some pointers,even if it turns out not to be possible. At the moment this is all thoughts. Suggestions as to what brand/type of digicam, laptop CPU size, OS's, programes, all welcome. Maybe I will have to play with the better quality webcams. As said ,all thoughts are welcome.

Off the top of my head ...
Connecting the camcorder to a reasonably decent and newish laptop should be quite easy (web-cams are poor quality with a slow frame rate and don't usually have decent zoom). Ideally you'd like a digital connection but nomral S-Video should do. Find a laptop with S-Video in or a camera which will output a live signal over usb and have TWAIN drivers for it.
Controlling the zoom may be difficult through the laptop but some cameras should support this.
You may also consider a decent digital camera as an option. The SLR cameras support powerfull zoom lenses that are often remotely controlled and many of them should output live video (but not great quality) directly to a tft screen. Then you also have the advantage of taking excellent photos too!
Thinking about it, most digital cameras output a live feed to a TV screen using composite video (the yellow phono plug).
