i just read the above artical and thought i'd mention something.

i don't know when it was researched but i bought the Samsung r60 plus from currys 2 and a half weeks ago and it came with a core 2 duo T5550 cpu, 160GB HDD and 2GB Ram. all this for £399.  it wasn't a one off offer as far as i am aware but had recently been reduced from £499, which even at that old price would have been in the sub-£500 catagory.

the artical is basing it with lower processor, smaller HDD and less RAM.

e6600 o/c to 3.0ghz, samsung F1 750GB HDD, BFG 7300gt oc, p5b deluxe wi-fi,corsair 620w psu,2-2gb ocz reaper 6400 in dual channel,scythe infinity, antec 900 case.

It takes a while to research / write / publish an article and things change weekly.

Bargain of the moment for a desktop replacement is the £399 Asus A7U-7P274C http://tinyurl.com/5jpvau
17" WXGA+ Laptop
AMD TL58 1.9GHz
2048MB
250GB
DVD-SM
WLAN
Webcam
HDMI
e-sata
Windows Vista Home Premium
2 Years Warranty

Got one in (and out) yesterday, very nice indeed.
You wouldn't want to travel far with it though!

Dell Vostro. Cheap and powerful. Mine was a smidgen over £500, but it plays Crysis properly.

Can't say a fairer deal than that

cheers guys, and i take your point dave but the reason i specifically point out the samsung r60 plus is that this is one of the laptops in the artical but i bought it nearly 3 weeks ago now and it had a much better spec than the artical states.

That pocketsurfer2 looked quite good. I've scoured Google for reviews and it seems to be a little dissapointing but something like that would be great for my mother. She has no interest in computing at all and has many things to do other than learn about Operating Systmes, desktops etc but would find the internet a useful tool. Something like that but either cheaper or better would be great.
The pocketsurfer 3 is supposedly out this year, that may fix a few problems.

also: P3 for the mrs and a linux box and probably enough bits to build another one

It's the curse of doing an article such as this, although we were keen to do it, given the wealth of laptop bargains on the market. Naturally, it took a few weeks to research and put together, and while we did do a price check again before it went to print, the lead time still seems to have been enough for the rug to be pulled on us a little!

MSI is releasing a web-surfing gadget with a 7" screen and a slide-out keyboard soon - I believe it's WiFi.

Does your mum have internet access as part of a Sky or Virgin Media deal? If so, I'd say a netbook like the Eee PC and a wireless router is the way to go.
