CPU - E2180 w/ OCZ Vanquisher
GPU - 9600GT
RAM - 2GB Patriot PC2-6400@800mhz 26802
Mobo - Asrock Penryn Aria.co.uk qf code 30791
I believe thats all the info thats needed, if not just ask. I have overclocked the 9600GT slightly from 650/900 - 690/940 but without advice I don't want to push it further. In a PCFormat mag of mine they OC'ed it to 792/1100 obviously I didn't want to put it straight to that. The main thing I need to know are safe temps. I saw somewhere that GPU's are fine up until about 80C but that seems so high. Under stress the GPU goes up to about 55C. The CPU, also overclocked slightly is at 210 up from 200Mhz FSB with both cores under full stress (using prime 95) it reaches about 47C. All help will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Also, how much of a performance increase would I get in gaming if I added an extra 2GB RAM?

Hello, Have you read the stickies on the overclocking forum? It will guide you through the basics and will give you an idea of what path to take, Regarding the 4Gb of ram in my opinion the only benefit would be if you were using a 64 bit operating system otherwise 2Gb is more than enough, Why not save the money and get yourself an E4*** or E7200 which will be a lot faster at stock speed and easier to overclock than the E2160.
I think your mobo wont let you change the VCORE manually, This will limit your overclock and its worth checking in bios and its worth googling your cpu to see what people are getting out of it at stock voltage, You have plenty of headroom in your ram but this must be set to the lowest divider in bios options if you overclock, I believe your FSB at stock is 200Mhz so you should be setting the ram frequency to 400Mhz in bios, Leave everything else on auto for now.
You have an aftermarket cooler which will give you room for overclocking, Although there are no completely reliable temp apps its worth keeping an eye on your temps, Ideally you want your cpu maxed at about 60-65 max.
warm regards

I'm not an overclocker, but the RAM issue may be a waste of money depending on what OS you're using. Windows XP 32Bit will inly address 3GB, 3.5GB I think can be wangled with a tweak somewhere.
Unless you have Vista 64, you're probably wasting your money. Naturally, I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong...

The E2180 (not E2160) you have has a multiplier of x10, so an FSB of 300MHz gives you 3GHz. It's possible at stock Vcore, but don't count on it. If yoy can provide us with a list of your available BIOS options then we can see what can be done.
Cheers, Slipstreem.

Hello, There is lots of info regarding your chip hitting 3Ghz, at this speed your ram will be at 600Mhz and your FSB at 300Mhz, Before you do anything to your rig i would ensure your mobo is capable of this and ensuring that your mobo will let you change the vcore manually(if you cant i dont think you will get there, My advice is to raise the FSB in small increments and ensure you understand how to reset CMOS in your bios, Dont forget that even a mild overclock on your rig will give you huge benefits.
warm regards
edit due to me getting CPU wrong

I did check out the stickies mog. The main reason I went for the E2180 is because it can be clocked quite high (I've seen 3Ghz mentioned around forums) and it's cheap. Due to this being a recent build (a week ago) I don't want to buy a new processor just yet if at all. The voltage options I can see in the bios are;
CPU Voltage, DRAM voltage, Chipset voltage and VTT Voltage.
The CPU can really go as high as 60C? That's good news, I was worried about it reaching 47/48...

The CPU is designed to be happy at around 85-90degC 24/7 and as long as you have thermal-throttling enabled in the BIOS, it's totally impossible to cook it anyway.
Cheers, Slipstreem.

So what core voltage does the CPU need to run at 3Ghz and be stable? This temp info is quite useful also, so thanks guys, maybe I can turn my deafening fans down a bit now.
Is the vcore the CPU Voltage?
