I know China is not really in most people's good books right now and can be known for supplying nasties as opposed to fixing them but I really do think that RISING Antivirus 2008 Free Edition is worth a second look.

In my opinion it performs better than AVGs offering, and if you don't like looking at or hiding AntiVir's notifier window is a very worthwhile low resource addition to your security software collections.

I hope you like it, I'm sure I'll hear from all those who don't…

How do you know if you can trust a AV product? There are so many dodgy ones about.

Intel e7200 @ 4.0GHz (4.32GHz SuperPi(e)) Lapped
Asus P5E-VM (Vdroop pencil modded)
4Gb Patriot Pc6400 4-4-4-12
250Gb Samsung Spinpoint
Sapphire ATI 3870/Akasa Vortexx Neo
Enermax 600 Watt PSU
Ubuntu/Win XP
All in a Thermaltake Handbag...
Or flying @ 4.21GHz in the Stacker.

Well because I've used it and a couple of its previous incarnations too and as a Moderator of the Security and Virus Issues section, I'd like to think that it'd be foolhardy of me to make a suggestion such as this blindly or with intent to cause disruption.

You yourself have heavily plugged your suggested freeware security software here to persons who previously had no idea of their trustworthiness

As with all software reviews and recommendations, all people need to make their own decisions whether to trust or accept any others opinion before acting upon it. I'm afraid that's life…

Thanks. I just wondered if there are groups of people who take apart/reverse engineer these types of programs to actually see how they tick rather than as you say take it from word of mouth or blind faith such as the category I fall into.

Just as a footnote to my previous post and to expand my response a little, although I do not use any antivirus or antimalware products on my main PCs, I have both real and virtual test PCs which I use to test or simply try out literally thousands of products per year.

I would never test anything, security software or otherwise, on my working PC's.

The beauty of Virtual PCs in particular with security software is that you can deliberately introduce malware, well-known, rare or otherwise and if the product fails a previous snapshot is sufficient to quickly fix the situation!

Thanks. Which leads me to another question. Are virtual PC safe? Can the virtual pc infect the host?
