It seems to me that people going off topic is a sympton rather tan the problem.
I often think of a digression which is relevent to the inital post but still off topic. The reason I either go off topic or don't bother posting is because by the time I have answered the current top and read all the posts 'since my last visit' and explained the point and linked to the previous topic it is no longer worth the effort.
Perhaps if topics were more easily created and cross referenced (i.e. a 'create sub-topic' button) then there would be far less digression and a far more active forum.

I agree totally. It all goes back to the Goshawk engine really. This Rolls-Royce engine was a development of the Rolls-Royce Kestrel featuring evaporative cooling. It provided 660 h.p. and powered the Short Knuckleduster, the Supermarine Type 224 (a predecessor to the Supermarine Spitfire) and initial examples of the Hawker Hurricane.
Developed as the Kestrel IV, the evaporative cooling machine was named Goshawk. A small number were built and they flew only in prototypes as a few manufacturer's private ventures and "one offs". Powers for individual installations are quoted between 650 and 700hp.
It was the power unit specified for the twin engined Short Knuckleduster flying boat.. sorry what were we talking about again?

I know what you mean but think the whole thing can be explained better philosophically!

Attercop ROFLMAO!
However on the subject of Rolls Royce engines, I was recently reminded of the chap who took a Merlin engine, coupled it with a big American Transmision and was testing his 'prototype Rolls Royce' Super sports car on the German autobahn.
According to legend Rolls Royce were alerted to it by Porsche who apparently complained along the lines of 'we do the sports cars, you do the luxury limos', after the 'Rolls Royce' prototype left everything standing.
Rolls Royce subsequently took action against the individual whose prototype the car was and put a stop to it.
Now whether that's an urban myth or not, a chap who doesn't live to far from me has a Rolls Royce Merlin engine in his garage, and looks fixed upon either testing the myth, or putting it into reality. He currently thinks that the life expectancy of the American transmission coupled to the Merlin Engine will be a matter of a few hundreds of miles before the transmission requires a rebuild.

That would be awesome. A Veyron beater! I was talking to an old war plane engineer at work the other day and i'm sure he said those things were V10's. All that chrome too. Works of art.

| Merlins were V12's, not V10's. Interestingly whilst they were famously fitted to the Hurricane and Spitfire (amongst many other uses) the V1 prototype of another famous WWII fighter, namely the Messerschmitt Bf-109, had been powered by its predecessor, the Rolls-Royce Kestrel V-12 engine in 1935.

| Spedders. One of the great delights of this forum is that it DOES wander off topic. I read and participate in other places, where po faced moderators keep pruning posts, or even binning them. This is one of the last few places where democracy rules, except where you cross the (hidden) line. Speaking of which, I must just pop off to bin a post about Skt 939 stuff

Very true Oldphart, I feel it helps emphasise the very casual nature of the forums
