Just started folding with my ageing socket A rig.
And thinking of upping my points by investing in some 'newer' C2D kit.
So i'm after pointers, recommendations, pitfalls.
On Processor, Mobo, Ram, PSU anything n everything really.
It will be folding 24/7, so has to run silently.
Budget??, mmmm, good question that..
Cheapest possible. (Free even alaways hopeing lol)

First built in 2001 and still going strong lol (thanks to those who've helped with the upgrades, over the years)

It's an interesting time at the mo, a lot of people are getting more ppd with GPU folding.
Keep an eye on the the new thread "What are you folding on?" here - http://tinyurl.com/66xhba
For some interesting comparisons between CPU and GPU folding, providing our team members participate in the thread.

| points production whilst folding will be a balancing act between how much you want to spend and what points per day you are looking at. At the extreme you could have 2 *GTX280's and a Q6600 producing close to 18000 PPD. however , that would be slightly out of your budget and will not be cheap to run. If you are looking to run 24/7 , power efficiency could be more important than initial purchase cost.a 9600GT will give about 4000PPD an overclocked 2180 running an SMP will produce about 1800 PPD .stick this in a cheapish Mobo like the the GA-73pvm-s2h and you would have quite a nifty points producer.
Cheers, Keith.

By silent I'll assume you mean silent @ 3ft (1m) not fanless silence 2 inches away from it
Also, do you need to use this pc or just fold on it? and also overclocking OK?
Can you re-use anything or is this a build from scratch? Answer those and we may be able to reply with something (or maybe also post in system builders + upgraders).
Phitore: Another thing I'm very interested in these days is the PPD/Watt and given the rising cost of energy lowering our power consumption is something we would all like to do (folding ain't cheap ). A CPU apparently provides much better performance (PPD) per watt than a graphics card (read here). Although a few nVidia graphics cards could lower your heating bills in winter quite nicely

Michael

Just finished a customer build of a GA-73PVM-S2H and E2180. Stable at 3Ghz. Mobo £44, CPU £44, DDR2 667 2GB ram (single stick) £28 = £116
An ASUS P5N-MX has less bells and whistles but should still do the o/c and is £11 cheaper. 1GB DDR2 would save a further £15

The ASUS partnered with the E2180 & 1GB ram sounding good so far ricedg
RoF: it will be a purely folding rig, and everything sourced from scratch (except peripherals)

In which case I agree with Dave R's choices.
Adding a case: pick one of the £11 ones
and a PSU: almost generic 300W unit is claimed to be reliable by eBuyer for only £7 (300W should be fine, my PC with everything running thats an E2160 @ 3.2Ghz and an 8600GTS at 900Mhz core (+ other stuff see Aurora in sig) uses 190W at full load)
EDIT: Since I don't advocate generic PSU's the cheapest real brand is a 425W hiper model for £23 here
SMP runs fine on my E2180 with 1GB RAM so take the £15 saved and use it to buy an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro for £15 or an Akasa AK965 for £10 that will keep it cool and also quiet. Then optionally add the cheapest DVD drive you can to load an OS onto it, if you need an HDD I may be able to offer you a brand new 80GB WD SATA drive for a good price (came out of my poweredge (not even formatted), its too small for actual storage use so as long as its helping someone fold I'm happy ).
If the E1400's small cache doesnt affect folding then this on ebay may save £20, but someone else will need to comment on this.

Michael

RoF: The size of the L2 Cache has an big effect on folding and alot of the WUs Stanford have been releasing are very big such as Project 2665 so a Dual Core Celeron would never be up to the job. There's a big differerance between the Celeron's 512kb L2 Cache and the C2D E6xxx's 4mb L2 Cache.
I would recommend to have atleast one of the newer Core 2 Duo CPUs if you are going to fold 24/7 but it is worth keeping an eye on how the GPU clients are going as many people are pulling in some extreme points.
