This problem really has me tearing my hair out.
Over the past few months my wife's computer keeps losing its internet connection.
I have tried a system restore, this did not work, an Acronis restore, this did not work, ipconfig / release and renew, no effect, I have done an XP repair install and reloaded XP SP3 and got the connection back only to find the next day no connection again.
This machine is using Avira anti-virus and Comodo firewall.
I have even uninstalled the LAN drivers and reinstalled them, but no difference.
This computer is on cable broadband through a D-Link wired router, which my other computer and laptop have no trouble connecting to, I have tried connecting direct to the cable modem and still no connection.
Has anyone got any thoughts on this .

I have not solved the origonal problem but in my spares box I had a PCI/Ethernet card, after installing this card and disabling the onboard LAN it is connected again.

Sounds like you have solved the problem. Faulty Ethernet adapter.
