Just built a system based on a 7200 and DS3R board, It does not have firewire,  I had a pci card lurking and have discovered a 4 pin power socket on it, Anybody know if it requires this source as I will be connecting an expensive camcorder to it.

Yes, it is important, the connector is there to supply the extra power from the system
Otherwise if your camcorder, etc draws more power than the system can supply,BANG.

Have a look at this link. http://www.howstuffworks.com/firewire.htm

As you can see you are looking at 1.5amps from a computer to a unpowered device and anything from 8 to 32 volts.

Well, I have failed to get the system to detect this card with and without a power supply to it, I have looked at new ones none of which appear to come with a cd (driver?) or socket to supply power, I have decided to get a cheap one online and see if it works.
