I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I have GeForce 7300 card in a ASUS A8V-VM SE motherboard running Ubuntu 8.04, the problem is my screen resolution at best is 640X480 @ 50Hz. I am using the Nvida accelerated graphics diver (latest cards) from Synaptic Package Manager, which is no better then the standard drivers.

Is there a way to increase my screen resolution with better drivers, and where can I get them.

Thanks

Have you set the screen resolution up in system/Administration/Nvidia xserver settings?

Hi Fuzzy-Felt Bloke
Your post says that you are running Ubuntu 8.04 rather than 8.04.1, so have you Updated it ?
(From the Ubuntu Hardware Compatibility List, the 7300 looks like an 'in-between' card for drivers, but in the last three weeks there have been better base ATI and NVidia drivers issued as part of the Update process, which might help.) You can try 'forcing' an Update by way of System, Administration, Update Manager, Check.
Please let us know if this helps.

Could you tell us the native/intended resolution and refresh rate? And if you could paste or attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that would be a big help too.

Hi Fuzzy-Felt Bloke
This will sound silly, but please try a restart from cold (all power disconnected) as this can sometimes force a better marriage between the driver, graphics card and display. Of course it may be a case that there's no tie-up between the driver and the display itself. (It would be more encouraging if it was at least defaulting to 800x600.) Perhaps you are using an unusual display ?
You could try EnvyNG, but that's supposed to be for even later cards. and messes up my [C] rig ATI card and doesn't yet help my [A] and [B] rigs which still seem to do better with the driver that you are using.

Hi guys

I did a complete start up, still the same. Attached is my text log as requested.

Is there a way to get things back to default before a started messing with things, if so how.

Thanks for your help.

Just messed about with 'Recovery Mode' from startup and altered dpkg. Screen resolution is OK, but ended up with US keyboard layout!  Will do for now.

Thanks for advice and help offered.
