Hi Fuzzy-Felt Bloke
Having just tottered back indoors from strimming my front lawn, I ought to tell you that I am not a Linux CLI expert like other forum members, more of a GUI/menu interface enthusiast, but I reckon that Bigdaddy was on the right track, it's most likely to be a display limitation. CRT phosphors can provide truer, brighter colours but flat panels are getting better, the best still being made in the Sharp plant, so you may need to 'bite the bullet' at some stage.
If you have the NVidia X Settings capability under System, Administration, you can use its X Server Display Configuration to see whether the driver is detecting your display correctly and providing a resolution change capability that you can try. If it's not installed, Applications Add/Remove (all available applications) should have it under System Tools. It seems to be better than System, Preferences, Screen Resolution for detecting and changing display resolutions.
Of course it could still be the graphics card, which according to http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/ was last checked against Ubuntu 7.10, so perhaps you could try a different card ?
Finding a graphics card and drivers that works well across OSs can be difficult, but at least you aren't then stuck with limited capability generic VESA drivers. (Although you could try that at 1024x768 for your rig.) Trouble is, if you don't have Linux-friendly partition imaging software, trying all this out can involve time consuming re-installation, admittedly easier than for XP. Don't you just love 'messing about in computers' to mis-quote Kenneth Grahame.

This is now marked as resolved, which is good. What was the final solution?

Just messed about with 'Recovery Mode' from startup and altered dpkg. Screen resolution is OK, but ended up with US keyboard layout!  Will do for now.

Thanks for advice and help offered.

This was the final outcome.

Excellent news. I would have been very surprised if you couldn't get arguably the most common res of the past few years up and running.
