Chaps,

I have downloaded and installed the x64 Version of MS Virtual PC 2007 on my Sig Desktop and have run into a problem. I have mounted a version of 64bit Ubuntu using Daemon Tools and set the Virtual Machine to boot off the virtual drive and got the Ubuntu install page, but when I asked it to install Ubuntu I get the following message "This kernel requires a x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

Where have I gone wrong here chaps? I have allocated a gig of RAM and about 13gigs of hard drive space on my root drive. I have downloaded "ubuntu-8.04-desktop-amd64" as it was the only 64bit version I could find. Should I download the 32nit version? I downloaded this as I intend to dual boot at some point and I have 4 gigs of RAM.

Help very much appreciated.

I thought that Microsoft's virtual PC offering only worked with various versions of Windows. I could be wrong but you may wish to try other virtualisation software. I have had suse and ubuntu working with virtualbox.

It did have a moan that this version wasn't supported, but it all installed OK. I will uninstall and and try Virtualbox.

VMWare Server is probably the best.

Virtualbox only supports 32 bit guests, IIRC.
Not sure about the others.

Edit: plus I don't think that the AMD64 version of Ubuntu is suitable for intel processors-I could be wrong though

Not using VM, but I am running the *AMD64* version of Hardy Heron on my C2D system with no problems.

The 64-bit version of Ubuntu being labelled AMD64 harks back to the days before Intel 64-bit CPU's.
The name just stuck.
