Compiz provides all the (mostly daft and useless) desktop effects.

To find out if it will work, System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects> select normal or extra.

Yeah I was hoping for a bit of 3D.

Your probably out of luck then, 3D acceleration is a bit flaky but it can be made to work if you do some googling.

Unless you're using VMWare Server with a Windows 2000 0r Xp guest:

Agreed, if you want compiz just install it properly and forget about using VM's.
If anyone is desperate to get 3D acceleration in a guest OS here's a link for you.
