It must save the battery life on laptops. If LCD's share anything with LED's then black takes less power.

TFTs/LCDs use the same amount of power at any color. Plus, it's not as pretty as Google

It's true. If you stand in a darkened room your lcd screen still gives off light even when the screen is black. Compare black screen to turned off and see!
