Hi,
I `accidentally` bought his workstation today, its a dual xeon 1.6 with 18gb scsi HD, matrox G200 graphics, 1gb pc800 RDRAM, running win 2k. Idea is for it to replace the pc in my sig.
what I would like to do is install a reasonably sized IDE hard drive, install a reasonable speed AGP graphics card (something like ATi1950 maybe) and install windows XP pro (so it uses both cpu's).
Idea being it should be a cheap and reliable pc for games such as WoW and LOTR online. I know absolutely NOTHING about these workstations so I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them.
So, the questions are...
will the pc run windows XP pro and will it do so from IDE? is there any problems running these stations as a computer for games and the like? will a high end AGP card work in this pc?
also, does anyone know the upgrade potential for the cpu's?
sorry if this should be in the system builders thread!

You really need to find out what the motherboard is (whether you look inside or use a pc wizard of similar).

| Drivers for XP here http://tinyurl.com/6kkalp Parts and diagrams here http://tinyurl.com/563tvs It has an AGP Pro slot and uses RDRam, but 1GB is enough for XP. Looks like the PSU connectors are propretary too. I think you're pretty stuck with it as it is, apart from adding an IDE HDD.

Ive had the signature pc running LOTRO without any real problems... but the asrock board is a bit funny with the sempron 3300 hence when I saw this and compulsorily purchased it (well... it was ridiculously cheap!) I thought this would be an alternative.
I though that this with a decent AGP card would handle lord of the rings, but hell, what do I know? You think the cpu's wont cut the mustard then?
Do games utilize the potential of twin cpu's?

| It's an AGP Pro slot, I don't think any "normal" AGP card will work. Not trying to rub your nose it in, but there's been a few people lately have fallen foul of this. Buying "workstations" or "servers" for "PC" use nearly always ends in tears. They are all based on the PC architecture but have adaptions that make them very fit for their purpose, but too specialist for general use. I'll bet in it's time it was an absolute ripper for CAD.
