umm... guys, help needed again with this xeon pc. Bought a 2.8Ghz 400FSB 603 pin cpu for an amazing £6, heh heh heh, fitted it to the w6000 removing both 1.7xeons. The pc wont boot, nothing comes up on the screen but there is hardd rive and optical activity. the heatsink for the 2.8 gets nice an toasty so thats doing something. Both the hard drive LED and power LED are on constantly- no flashing of lights. no bleeps from the motherboard.

Theres an odd jumper named `park` so I thought maybe id try that (thinking it `parks` the secondary cpu space) its got three pins and ive tried every combination with a standard jumper.

out of pure desperation ive even put one of the 1.7's back in to see if it works but predictably not.

one thing that is a little odd is the exhaust fan that takes the hot air from the cpu's out the back of the pc doesnt spin at all now (must be set to only spin if the cpus are setup right).

Tried resettign the CMOS, nothing doing.

anyone knpow how to convert a dual cpu xeon into a single cpu?

It's an AGP Pro slot, I don't think any "normal" AGP card will work.

Nope, should be ok with that. My old system had an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard, with an AGP Pro slot, and never had a problem running standard AGP cards.

Stu, have you tried the new CPU in both sockets? (One at a time, obviously ). From my VERY limited experience of dual CPU boards, one socket is a master and has to be used for a single CPU setup

Wait...

From Wiki : "AGP Pro cards will not fit into standard slots, but standard AGP cards will work in a Pro slot"

Looks to be along the lines of PCI-e then. i.e. the biggest only works in the biggest, but the smallest works in all

Tippon, I beat you to it

Yep, but that's unconfirmed from Wikipedia, which isn't always reliable. Mine was confirmed from real world usage spanning several years and lots of various AGP cards from most of the manufacturers

There was no probs with the AGP, it fitted fine and worked fine. If I recall the AGP pro cards had extra conectors at the front rather than the back, as Marten quite rightly said, std cards fit in a pro slot but a pro card will not fit in a std slot.

I tried the cpu in both cpu zif sockets to no avail. the lot has now been broken and sold on flea bay for more than I bought the old thing for so Im ok with that. shame, but if you will mess with these things.... Sons new games pc build is in the sig but awaiting some money to pay for a better SATA HD and possibly some more RAM.
