The latest version of Frugalware has been released, 0.9rc1.

Now, given the name, how big would you expect the iso to be?

Wrong .....................its 4,239mb

Am I missing something? Four and a quarter gigs just doesn't sound frugal to me.

Maybe that is including a chunk of the software repository too?
Debian also offers 3 DVD's worth of .iso's downloads but you only need the first CD/DVD to preform an install.

Edit;
Which CDs do you need? If you install a server without X, only the first. If you need a graphical system, then you'll need the second CD as well.
Note
Don't download CDs 3-11 unless you don't have an internet connection! You can install language packs later from FTP servers if you need them.

That's probably true but there seems to be no "non-repository" iso available and a 4gb+ iso download kinda puts you off even bothering to try it.

Cheers,

Imagine how big the non-frugal version would be.

Intel e7200 @ 4.0GHz (4.32GHz SuperPi(e)) Lapped
Asus P5E-VM (Vdroop pencil modded)
4Gb Patriot Pc6400 4-4-4-12
250Gb Samsung Spinpoint
Sapphire ATI 3870/Akasa Vortexx Neo
Enermax 600 Watt PSU
Ubuntu/Win XP
All in a Thermaltake Handbag...
Or flying @ 4.21GHz in the Stacker.

Try some MM Super Pi(e) here!

The non-repository is either using the first two CD .iso's (at about 700MB each) or the netinstall .iso

Edit; The net install is ~45MB

http://frugalware.org/about

Question: What is "The Frugalware Philosophy" about?

Answer: Briefly: simplicity, multimedia, design. We try to make Frugalware as simple as possible while not forgetting to keep it comfortable for the user. We try to ship fresh and stable software, as close to the original source as possible, because in our opinion most software is the best as is, and doesn't need patching.

Question: Do you plan to release a live cd?

Answer: Well, we have already a live cd, called FwLive. Currently it supports only i686, but an x86_64 version is also under development. You can find it in the standard release directories.

True......but it turns out that that is still over 600mb, hardly frugal when compared to Puppy, DSL, Slackware or even Xubuntu and GoblinX Standard, which has almost every window manager built-in to its live-cd as a start-up option and still weighs in at well under 400mb.

Cheers,

May be Frugalware is a mnemonic?

Flaming ridiculously unnecessary gigabytes appearing little when apostate reads entry
